Seeing you guys have helped me out so much to date i thought ill ask what really is a rather stupid question, where are the recovery points on the D1?

Just i don't want to be putting stress on weak components, of course i would only need these points for when i need to recover my mates who are all LC and Paj drivers...

For the front you need to put to plates - one on either chassis rail to take a shackle. These can be bought from the likes of Troutbeck Sales & Services.

For the rear you can do a similar arrangement but it is easier if you have a towbar to get a recovery receiver that slots in to it.

just a thought does anyone know of any good A/T's in a size 235/75/R16

As im trying to keep to the standard width as i have been encouraged to do so, and by using a 75 profile it will give me a 29.87" tall tyre putting a little extra under the low disco pumpkins

Iv also been looking at the 225/75/R16's but they don't give quiet as much lift under the pumpkins also im not to keen on running such a narrow tread, if anyone is running either of these sizes please let me know how they fair on the disco and what tread you are running particularly if you are running a A/T

There is no such size as 235/75 R16. The next step up is 225/75 R16 or 245/70 R16.

I would be seriously looking at a set of 245/75R16's. The extra clearance is essential for the tracks around Sugy and north at Booral and ........ well everywhere.

I've had 245/75R16 maxxis bighorns on my 98 tdi disco for almost 12 mths now and there is no way I would go back to a smaller tyre. In fact my next set will be 235/85R16s just to get a little bit more clearance under the diffs.

Because tyres take a long time to wear, get the biggest ones (maintaining some sensibility, unless you want to start the angle grinder up and start shaping guards) you can afford, you will be thankful for it later on.

From a personal point of view, I have been very happy with the 245/75 size of tyre and have not found a hugely detrimental affect on performance.

    Cheers

Cheers mate! do you have any troubles with the 245/75R16's rubbing on the gards as that is something i want to avoid without having to cut the gaurd, the thought of doing that kinda scares me to be honest...well atleast untill im a little more serious, also does this size tyre have any troubles on tight corners like coming into contact with steering arms?

How much would i be set back for a set of five bighorns in this size? also how have you found the life of the tyres? k's traveled tread left?

Also i live on a 200 acre property on sugy so iv got a fairly good idea on the tracks id like to tackle once iv got the lot sorted out

    Cheers mate!

    Okay

Give Tyres n more on Newcastle Rd a ring, ask for Scott. I know both of the owners pretty well. Tell them Ian G sent you. For 5 of the Maxxis Bighorns I'd be thinking around the 1300 mark, at a guess?

In terms of guards, first thing, has your Disco still got original steel or alloy wheels? If it does, combined with your new suspension, all you'll need to do is a camel cut on the rear guards, very easy and if done properly looks factory.

If your wheels are aftermarket wheels, then good chance they stick out further than Landrover wheels and even with the new suspension lift, you may be looking at rolling the lip on each of your guards (along with the camel cut).

Whatever wheels you have, you may have to adjust the steering stops to stop the front wheels rubbing on anything in tight turns. I had to wind the steering stops out slightly but have never found this an issue for turning circle wise.

I have just sold my alloys and bought aftermarket steel wheels to get a wider track and ended up fouling the guards with my tyres. Result was I needed to roll the lips of my guards which I have now done. I have an OME 2 inch lift on my Disco that I think has sagged a little.

Eventually I am looking at getting bigger tyres again, so I'm looking into guard extensions to allow some more of the guards to be cut away. You may not be interested in doing this, so let that be the basis of your decision "How much body work do I need (want) to do to accommodate the size of tyre I want".

In terms of property, you on the Richmond Vale side of Sugy??

I'm a little scared by the idea of tacking to my pride and joy with tin snips, but the more i think about it, its something which im going to have to do eventually so now is as good as ever. I can bring myself to do that but how do i extend the steering stoppers? is it a part i need to buy or can it easily be done by myself?

I know its fairly low but i was trying to keep the tyre cost to $1000 , I know may of you guys run the BigHorns but are there any other tyres in that size which will do the job but slightly cheaper. Or is that about as good as i'm going to get?

As for where i live im just out the back of westy ...once i iv got the gear all sorted i would like to get out there and see what grover and myself can do. Do you have many trips out here?

Yeah we do quite a few runs on the eastern side of Sugy and down to Freemans Waterhole, but most of our good stuff is up at the Booral State Forest (just nth of Raymond Terrace).

As far as keeping budget down, have you thought about just getting 4 newby's and getting a dodgy spare in the same size?

As for the steering stops, they are a bolt that screws out of the hub with a locknut. It's self explanatory enough when you have a look. There should be plenty of adjustment.

    Cheers
