    timing light problem

I fitted a new ignition amplifier from RPI Engineering in UK. now I cannot see the timing marks when i use a timing light. I have set up and checked that the engine is on TDC on the copmpression stroke. i have turned the distributor so that the rotor arm is at the no1 cylinder plug lead. when I start it up it runs like a new one but there are no timing marks. If I put the timing light sensor onto no5 plug lead i can see the timing marks. Moving the leads around so that no1 now goes to no5 position, ie moving them all around the cap, it will not start. Any ideas? Is it the new amplifier?

#1 is on the passenger side front of engine, closely followed by #3, #5, #7,
#'s 2,4,6,8, are on the drivers side of engine with #2 at the front, check your leads are setup correctly, if they are, get back to us, Regards Frank.

Mark the side of the dissy body in line with #1 spark plug terminal, as noted by tracing back along the lead from #1 spark plug, front pass. side. Rotate engine with socket and bar on front pulley nut until TDC mark on pulley lines up with pointer on timing cover. Remove dissy cap and see where the rotor button is pointing, if it is pointing adjacent to the mark you put on the dissy body below #1 terminal, then you are at TDC. If the rotor is pointing in the opposite direction,i.e. 180 degrees out, rotate the engine a further 360 degrees and the rotor should then be pointing to the correct mark.
Starting at #1 spark plug terminal on the dissy cap and travelling in a Clockwise direction check the sequence of the plug leads are as follows, after #1 heading clockwise #8-#4-#3-#6-#5-#7-#2.
Did you take the dissy out when you fitted the new ignition amplifier, let me know if the above leads and timing marks are correct, Regards Frank.

Had you used a timing light on this engine before?

People say the outer of the harmonic balancer can rotate on the inner and therefore the timing marks are out.
So if it runs and drives well without pinging then I'd say that is the problem.
Maybe just adavnce the timing until it pings under load and then back it off and check the timing with the light again to see what you can see.

Yes and also the keyway flogs out and makes it impossible to time correctly, why would a new amp make the timing marks on the timing cover hard to see - they arent even close to each other ?

Thank you to all who replied. Yes I have used the timing light on this engine before and all was ok. I checked the timing as most of you said and that agreed with the way I had and have done it before. I checked number one plug and lead, (put them both into another engine) I checked the firing order of the leads again. Then disaster hit. In an efort to keep the timing light leads away from the fan, a spanner flicked into the fan. This shredded the fan then flicked the spanner into the radiator. Should get new radiator and fan Tuesday, then start again. Ouch..
