Bighorns!!!

Hello,
I read alot of posts last night and am slowly narrowing my tyre choice down but still have some further questions


Of the bighorns, what is fuel (or lack there-of) like? I have a standard V8 DII. What's the compound?

Also, is it 'really' ok to use these as normal road tyres in addition to off road. I can't fathom the thought of having a second set of tyres and wheels and stuffing around with changing them. I'm not overly concerned about the noise, I have our little ones in the back who I think would be louder *lol*

I currently have dueler as standard on my truck in 235/70/16 and can't find anywhere how much HIGHER the LR would be with either of the Bighorns, or the MA751 in an LT. Tyre size I was considering would be:235/75/16 OR 245/75/16.

Would either of these sizes in what ever tyre I choose still fit ok without having to cut, roll, of do any modifications to the guards or modifications to anything else? I don't plan getting a lift kit as our carport is angular (think of 1/2 a triangle) so I don't have much room as it is...

Of those who have either of those tyres running - how has gearing, braking, handling, cornering, take off (at lights) been?

Also, of the Maxxis i'm also 'considering' the MA751. From research LT is a better option.

I have the Bighorns in 245/75R16

They were a great price for the tyre and i use them on road A LOT!!! as a daily driver and they are fine not to noisey and they handle better then the BFG's my old man is running. They are great on rock and mud they are also a strong tyre with good cleaning abilities and side lugs.

They are long lasting if looked after 80,000K easy. And the size i have gone with has not effected economy nor has it effected the gearing too much. And braking is fine still haven't run up the back of anyone :p

As for hight the size i have is 30.6" tall i think so half of that above 29" is 0.8" so add that to the vehicles hight now and thats what you will have. As for guards you will need to do a camel cut there are plenty of threads on that especially if you are not getting a lift!

I have had the Bighorns in a 265/75/16 now for 2 mths and probably done close to 8000kms on them. Majority of it as a daily driver ( average 5-700kms a week) and 3 trips. Love them.....I think if noise is an issue with muddies....you shouldnt have a 4by ( directed and no one in particular)....I love the whistle of the tyre :). I have driven them on all sorts of terrain and they have performed really well.

In terms of fuel...I have muddies and a full length rack on Smokey.....consumption has gone up by around 2l/ 100kms...which I think is reasonable and considering fuel is cheaper...not a biggy.....on average still get over 700kms to a tank. Gearing is different and speedo out by about 10kms an hr, but have GPS to follow. I have the 10ply LT, so quite stiff but so far seem as tough as nails. Would happily buy again....did I mention they look horn as well :cool:.

Thanks for the replies, however I really wasn't wanting to do any cutting on the body.

I know this may sound like a really stupid question - what's the size of tyre in the bighorn I can happily run WITHOUT having to cut anything or getting a lift kit?

Landyprincess - the smallest diameter Bighorn is the 245/75-16 according to their website, so there isn't an option to go smaller.

Grover-98, what pressure did you end up running on the road.
Had some fitted to my D1 this morning (245/75-16) and the guy at Bob Jane put 42psi in them.

Feels too high to me so I'll take them down a bit, but would be nice to know if others have already established some guidelines.

I'm currently running 40 in mine and that seems to be a good pressure. :)

OK - so if I have the 235/75/16 Maxxis 751 Bravos LT do I still need to cut the guards? Or is the differentiator the '235 v's 245 being sidewall > sidewall?

I'm keen on the bighorns to be honest - I like the look of them, but i'm not so keen (chicken) to cut the guards myself. My hubby is trying to persuade me to go for standard tyres and I don't want to!

I guess my next question is:

has anyone actually got the bighorns on a 2001 SII V8 Manual?
Specifically what did you need to do - only cut the guards (rear LHS/RHS) or only fold the lip - did you need to make any modifications to the front guards and anything on the underneath near the wheel nuts/axels? Hope that made sense?

Trivial questions I am sure but help appreciated...

If you have a Disco2 I don't think you have to trim anything at all for 245/75R16.

D2's can run the 245's without any trimming, they seem to be wider in the guard than the D1 and Rangie Classics.
