    Question torque converter queries

    Guys

does anyone know if the series 1 disco v8 torque converter fits the 300TDI. Mine's cactus and v8 units seem to be everywhere so will it work? The manual gives different part numbers so that's not a good start.

    many thanks

No, it won't fit straight up. It also has a different stall speed that is not suited to the Tdi at all. Getting yours rebuilt is the best Idea, I wouldn't fit a used one AT ALL to any vehicle as they can have all sorts of problems like being full of metal fragments or having a worn out lock up clutch etc.

The TC is a very important part of the trans, and should be treated as such.

Question auto trans fluid leak query

OK, when I got the auto off I discovered that the drive plate had split allowing the torque converter to wobble about and emptying the gearbox and so no drive. Well I got the torque converter rebuilt (as advised - thanks) and put a seal kit in the tranny oil pump. I had a fellow at the gearbox place check the bearing that the torque converter sits on (behind the seal) and was told it was fine.
Got it all back together (big job) and there remains a constant drip leak from the bottom of the bell housing - at the drain.
Before I pull this *****thing out again any clues as to what's going on? At this stage I am intending to replace the bearing despite it not looking too bad because I cant think of what else would be allowing the leak.

Anyone met this problem before or who can give me some advice??

Is it ATF or engine oil?
It is very common to develop a rear main seal leak, so if I ever pulled the gearbox off I would be sure to replace the rear main seal also.
    ATF is red.

good thought but its definitely ATF. You make a good point though - when I do pull the bugger out again I'll replace the rear main anyway. Thanks, johnd

    Hi Johnd,

My experience with the 300Tdi rear main seal is, if it isn't leaking, don't mess with it! Also, if you REALLY want to fit one, do not use the gasket, use a high quality sealant and do not over tension the carrier bolts.
