That was thru NRMA. I have a car, and house & contents thru them, so I get a 10% discount. Im also 27, so Im past that dredded 25yo and under stereotype.
I was reading your thread about your search for a car, and now the purchase. Good for you! What are the specs on it? Leather, all electric? Where did you get yours from? Im looking on fleabay and carsales.
wait till you tell them that one of the fitted extras is a bull bar (thats if you're gonna have one), watch your insurance price sky rocket!
im 30, a rating one for life and another car with comprehensive insurance and other bits n peices and my 95 tdi i pay $920 per year, without a bull bar its $600 odd
I can not understand why anyone would waste $500 - $1000 dollars per year (and then pay loadings etc, and have all sorts of hastles making claims as we all hear the horror stories in dealing with insurance companies).
I spend less than $100 dollars on 3rd party property per year (just in case it is my fault and I hit something expensive).
I have saved $25 - 30K over nearly 30 years. I seldom own a car worth more than $10K (mind you I have spent a lot more on some cars).
The last car I wrote off (a HJ GTS Monaro back in the early 80's) I paid $4K for car (spent a $zillion modifying it which would never have been insurable, yeah I know youth is wasted on the young) and then hit a roo about 18 months later. Sold the wreck in parts for $3+K. Insurance would have cost me $1.2K per year plus loading etc. I think the same could apply to most serious modified 4x4 in principle.
I don't even consider it a risk. If I total my Disco tomorrow I can walk away ahead (unless I total myself but that becomes a 3rd party personal injury). If I can recover any thing from wreck it would be a bonus.
Please someone tell me why you would comprehensively insure a vehicle worth less than $10K ? Perhaps I am just jealous of those who can afford $20k+ vehicles that are worth insuring
Food for thought
The cheapest part of 4x4ing is the fuel!

mate found it on carsales, its a 95 tdi(non es) i dont like leather it goes crap after a while, i dont like sunroofs they are just problems, it has all electric windows which are conevniant but they will cost me money when they break, i bought mine local private, i been looking into em for prob 5months and prices ect i rekon i done pretty damm good, i need to fix a few things but it has such low mileage 128 000, i wouldent get a petrol myself but each to there own, i was looking at ones that have been modded ect and i want to build my own exactly how i want it to suit our family ill be getting most things 2nd hand when i can and swingin the spanners myself, and making things like the drawers myself
Do you have that $25-30K in the bank? If not, then you have actually saved nothing. You just spent your money on something else, so that basically makes your statement untrue.
Thats like me saying "Instead of getting a $250000 home loan, I only got one worth $190000, therefore im saving $200 a month on repayments. Im not though. Im not saving a penny of it. It goes on other stuff.
I comp. insure my cars, because if I write it off, I will get money to get a new one. I dont have to stuff aroud, stressing about where Im going to get 5k to get a new car. If you have done nothing untowards with your car, its not modified more than what you hae told the insurance companies, you shouldnt have a problem.
End of the day, its $20 a week for peace of mind.
Thats just me. Everyone views things differantly. :)

Like when I stopped smoking, I don't have $80 in my wallet at the end of the week:confused:
Im sorry Joel but saying your going to buy a Disco late 2009 is untrue.
It too late, you have already started looking, which means one which fits your criteria will pop up more likely sooner than later, then it's all over land rover, it will be yours.
I said the same thing a couple of months ago, looked around, did a couple of test drives, I wanted a manual TD5 with low K's.
Then BUGGER ME up pops a 2003, liquidated stock, $10k under the Red Book price.
It's now mine:)
If you don't want one now, stop looking.:p
But if you do, enjoy.
Cheers Lionel
That's exactly the point! the $25K has gone on other stuff that otherwise I would not have been able to afford. I opted for a less than $200k home loan as well so that I have money to spend on other stuff. I think you are actually supporting my point :)Quote:

But I will admit that if I was really annal about my saving money on Comp Ins I should have put it in a separate interest bearing account to cover my losses (1 write off and 1 x stolen car over 30+ years) but I am still way ahead, and I don't have any hastles when a car gets totalled, I just go out and buy another with cash for less than $10k. It is not very often an Insurance company pays out the full amount for a replacement vehicle and if it does how much have you paid in premiums? But if it is piece of mind people want then that's fine, there are lots of insurance companies more than eager for your business!

Youth is waisted on the Young! :D
Thommo, this could be a point that both sides could argue back and forth till the cows come home.
Yeah I can see how in part I am supporting your arguement, and yes that the 25-30k you have not spent on insurance has gone on other fun stuff, where mine will go to some insurance company.
Basically, your happy not to have insurance, and Im happy to have insurance (comp. ins. that is)
Lets not beat our heads against walls hey :)
