What is a Disco's running costs?

Im trying to decide which route to go down on the L.R. department. Ive been looking at some cheap (under $4500) Discos online, but Im concerned about the fuel consumption and the cost of replacement parts, like fuel pumps, water pumps etc.

Can someone here give me some feedback on the fuel consumption they are getting? Currently, with the ute (3800 V6) Im getting 9-9.5 l/100kms.

They are a pretty cool looking vehicle, that will be my daily. From flicking thru the forum, they seem a very capable 4x4, with minimal mods, if only better tires.

I look forward to hearing some feedback from you all!

**edit** Im not fussed on fuel type, but would rather the petrol variants.

if you want decent fuel economy then go for a diesel, i have a 1995 Discovery and im getting using between 10 and 11 litres to 100km
expect to pay $6000+ for a tdi

i used to own a 1994 Discovery V8i and the fuel economy was pretty well... crap compared to what i drive now.. approximately 17litres to 100km... but you can get a V8i within your budget.. so i guess its just a matter of weighing it all up...

you could get a V8i on gas however then expect to pay $6000+

    i hope this helps

well if you go V8 you can double that

BUT, dont forget you are pushing a brick that weighs twice what the rolladore weighs,,

as for the rest,, normal costs for a 15 year old car.

Sounds about within the regions of my Buick's 455 V8. Dont drive that much though.
Its no shock really, the fuel economy. It is a bit of a brick

As long as its not 27/100, and water pumps dont cost $1200, and alternators arent $2000, like my friends Barina, all shall be fine...

Ive seen some rust under the back carpet too. How common is that, and how easy is that to check with the owner standing there? "Excuse me whilst I rip up your carpet..."

rust under the carpet is common, but while you're at it check around the alpine windows, common for rust around there too..

just tell him that you're checking common areas for rust...

The cost of doing any thing to a L.R. is far in excess of a Holden. With my statesman I don't blink an eye when picking up bits for it and easier to work on. I noticed on holden web sites that people complain about costs but after running Landys getting anything for a holden is change jar stuff and I'm not even slightly kidding.

I may not have people agree with me on here but my wallet sure tells the story. And the ease to get any parts is nice. Mind you L.R. parts are easy enough to get too especially for the D1's that your looking at but with the holden you get use to being able to ring up any one and you know you can have it on your door or pick it up within 24 hours.

Any vehicle is going to cost but as far as 4x4 (real 4x4 not dinky toy) I don't think any thing can be cheaper than a V8D1.

I have put my 2cents worth in several times recently:

Running Cost V8 D1 Petrol a winner for me

Compared to the money I used to spend on my "pet cars" running/modifying a D1v8 is about as cheap as it gets. Also as I keep putting forward the cost of fuel (be it either type) is but a small fraction of the overall cost of 4x4ing.

GO THE V8...........if it is just too much then you can always put one of "them thar BBQ kits" on it.

I agree that Holdens, esp the Commy, are cheap to own, and run. Provided you look after them.

Currently I run 2 cars. I am on single income, so its all coming out of my wallet. Ill sell the Buick (Joel's 1976 Buick Electra Limited) to pay for the new car, then put the Ute on the market, and whatever I get for that, Ill put some into tires, lift kit, & snorkle, then the rest goes on the home loan.

Running one car would be a huge cost saver for me anyway, but its good to know the cost at the bowser, as I will be there every week

Another question for you all what year models are the D1, and the D2?

    1997 V8 Manual.

Highway economy as my daily driver is around 12l per 100km.

I am in the middle of a 5 week road trip, loaded up with the air con on ALL the time, averaging 14 - 15l per 100km - which is awesome.

Round town the figures go up - but mine has not yet gone over 16l per 100km....

Wow thats really good DJ. Most of my driving is on long, straight flat roads, with mainly 80km/h speed limits. Thats going to and from work. There is no traffic. Ever. Its great. Only 3 sets of traffic lights too. When really trying to be frugal on petrol with the Ute, I can get down to 8.5/100. My neighbour has the same car, and is getting 14-15/100. It can make a big differance with driving style.

I rang my insurance company, and inurance is $180 a year cheaper than a Commy ute (96 VS V6 manual, stock) coming in at about $840 a year.

Green slips are the same. Didnt ring around though. I know I an get cheaper, but I was compairing what I have now, to what I will get.

5 minutes up the road from me is a wrecking yard that deals in 4x4, with a lot of Landys from what I saw. Im going back tomorrow to get a better look, and get some prices on panels, rims misc parts etc.

Im sure that it will be a much nicer car to drive than the crash and bash ute. As much as I love that car, I think the landy will poo all over it

I wont bee looking at buying till mid 09, or at worst, late 09.I know thats a LONG time away, but thats just when I will be buying one. Unless I sell my Buick before then, then I will get one as soon as I find a goodie!

Its all very exciting. Am looking forward to driving my own 4x4 at Lake Lyell, rather than being in various mates cars.

On that, we were out there yesterday, and doing a river crossing, my mate in his 08 Pathfinder ventured a bit off planned course, and we got a bit "floaty" We got out ok, but inside the car was quite wet He wasnt a happy man. His wife was a bit more upset, as its HER car!!
