Despite the changes to lpg pricing I think it is still worthwhile. It would have to go up a fair bit for me before petrol became the better option. The biggest thing is finding a local station who sells it the cheapest. I often see it as low as 42cents but locally I don't get under 55cents. By the time the new pricing structure comes in, in 18 months I would have saved a minimum of $2,500. And as it is being phased over time so I will save for a long time after the changes happen. And the end price may not be all that bad anyway.

If you add in the locked in price rises tax wise it will still be cheaper than running diesel.

    Cheers

This is what is happening in WA to LPG prices due to tax increases, as taken from the WA Fuelwatch site:

LPG is the only transport fuel in WA, which currently does not have a Federal Government excise applied to it.
An LPG excise will be introduced in July 2011 in five annual increments of 2.5 cents per litre (cpl) taking it to a total of 12.5 cpl by July 2015.

I assume this Federal Government excise will be the same across Australia -so not really that bad after all.

I bought an '01 D2 V8 5 years ago with the specific intention of converting it to gas ASAP .... this proved to be very difficult and over the months which stretched into years, could not get anyone interested in doing it.

I did a lot of research on this, and did come across the occasional instance of Disco 2 being converted..... But everytime I thought I had found a solution, the installer would back out at the last minute, quoting issues with OBD2 diagnostics and engine management.

I also looked at importing a system from RPIv8 in the UK, but landed cost and compliance issues made me reluctant.
In the last 12 - 18 months however, things have changed quite a bit and Vapour Inject / SGI systems are a lot more common.

Too much time passed, and with a vehicle change looming I decided not to go ahead - sold the car in may last year

However I did come across a young chap in Jandakot area, who was willing and able -He fitted a prins SGI system to my latest vehicle (Citroen V6) and subsequently fitted the same type of system to a mates 2003 D2 V8 (update model)

This system worked fantasticly on the D2 - No loss of power, no backfiring etc,
However, his D2 had an inherant engine problem, which became really apparant after running on gas for a few hours or until really heat soaked - Nasty engine knock

A top end lubricator was fitted, investigation of rockers / lifters etc, even tried diferent oils (all full synthetics), doses of "Slick 50", Moreys ... etc etc

After various diagnosis, information gathering etc, we came to the conclusion that the probable cause was the start of the slipping liner scenario.

The vehicle consequently had the gas removed and was sold cheaply to a wholesaler

This particular vehicle always had what sounded like a noisey lifter when cold, and while it never did overheat, I think the thermo fans ran a hell of a lot more frequently than they should have. The motor continued to run ok on petrol.

The point of the story is :
It's not 100% guaranteed your going to get a reliable vehicle - If you have any doubts about your engine dont do it !
One of the possibilities we explored with this particular vehicle was removing the engine and getting stepped liners fitted ..... this seemed to be a $3k - $6K fix depending on how much you are prepared to do yourself.
    The gas system worked great

Hmmm, I accidently posted before finishing.

As I said, the system itself worked very well, and I am very happy with the system as fitted to my own vehicle.

The Business that fitted both systems was:

    Force Fed Gas ..... Shane
    08 9414 1316

    26 Chullora bend Jandacot
FFG - Force Fed Gas, injected gas specialist, LPG Autogas, Gas conversion

The conversion cost for the D2 was about $5k with a manifold tank in the wagon section.

The Citroen V6 was $4.5k with a donut tank fitted to spare wheel well.

I am by no means trying to put you off conversion, My first D1 had no major issues for over 5 years running as gas only, The Citroen has plenty of go, is very reliable and brings a smile to my dial every time I fill up

    Hope the info helps
    regards Neil
