I like both the Tdi and Td5 (I have a Td5). If you get a Tdi, the fuel pump can be blueprinted and dyno-tuned for impressive power/torque results.
How tall are you? I find the windscreen on the D1's just a bit low for me. But may not be a problem for you.
If you decide on a Disco, buy a service history with a Disco attached.

FWIW Series 2 Disco V8 - You can buy excellent examples within your budget. Ignore the fuel costs and enjoy a refined reliable vehicle. I did the cost comparisons recently between Diesel and V8 petrol - total cost of ownership over 5 years V8 came out in front. I have ordered a Rangie Classic V8 to use as my daily driver. ( I already have a Defender and a Disco 1 - both diesel).
