    Another D1 Tyre thread

So I was out buying an inverter today and I came across this in a car yard

    It's a 6x6 Perentie

Much to my disapointment the car yard had close several months ago and the landrover dealer next door was just using the yard to store cars. Having already pulled over I decided to make the most of it and get a quota on some new tyres and rims from the tyre show the next door down.

I'm currently driving a D1 tdi with 30/9.5/R15 Coopers ST not sure of the offset on it. It seems to be lifted slightly but i'm not sure of the exact size of the lift and theres no flares or rubbing currently

As i'll be taking a trip up north and the tyres need replacing I thought I might move back to the 16s as this is what the other d1 in the group will have

I'm looking at a something in the 245/75/R16 range and wondering if i'd be able to fit these without any dramas and what offset I should be looking for in the rims.

I was quota'd $350 for maxxis Bighorns and about the same for BFG ATs I was also looking at the Micky T ATs as well but that shop wasn't able to supply them.

So after that little story the 2 questions are

Whats the best set of 16' rims (Steel or Alloy) and what offset should i use for 245/75/R16 tyres ?

And if i'm doing a 2000k trip what would be the best option for Tyres in that size?

    Thanks
    Rob

245/75/16s would be a good size, you might have to give the guards a slight trimming but that isn't any hassle as long as you have an angle grinder
Personly i would stick with your standard off-set on either steel or alloy rims.
The disco steel rims are very hardy but are also quite heavy, so you can decide which would best suit your needs.
The wider you go with off-set the more troubles you will have with tyres rubbing on guards
For tyres i would go with some good muddies, better puncture resistance etc, otherwise a good set of all-terains would be good as well e.g mickey t's bfg, maxxis bighorns.

245/75/16's will easily fit on a standard alloy or steel Disco 1 rim. They wont rub on the inside of the guards but on full flex they will rub on the lower rear edge of the back guards, which is easily fixed with a slight trim. You only have to take off about an inch and when its done, it doesnt look obvious or daggy. We can give you some pictures and measurements later if you need them.

$350 a tyre sounds fairly expensive. When I bought my 245/75/16 Cooper STT's, they were about the $295 mark, so shop aorund, you should get a better price, esp for Maxxis who are normally quite a bit cheaper than Cooper, BFG etc

    hope that helps

I found from recent shopping around (a month ago) in the 245/75R16 size, all LT construction, Cooper ATR - 290, ST 300, BFG A/T (not made in 245/75 - was 245/70) 375, BFG M/T 360.

I then asked my dad who lives in Victoria and his local block was doing the BFG's about a hundred cheaper.

Try every local place and semi-local place you can, there might be a fair amount of difference to make it worth your while.

I had a similar thing happening too... Called a few places locally and the best I could find for the 245/75/r16 Bighorns was $310-$330 but 2 hours down the road I was quoted $270!

You will get alot of variation. Considering the place that quoted me $330 was supposed to be a major "distributer" of maxxis!

I paid $240ea f&b for the Bighorns in Brisbane 15 months ago.
The MTRs at the time were cheaper than your Bighorn price!

    These were 245/75R16 too.

Well i just bighorns in 245/75/16 put on my d1 yesterday, decided to go with a set of stock steel discovery rims 2nd hand and kept my aloys with the standard tyres on. As for triming the rear guard i took about 30mm off in a diagonal cut from the back corner and trimed about the same off the inside of the wheel arch so still looks like stock and clears the tyre nicley.

    Nice.

Will that cut be enough for when the suspension compresses with steering, and also when the bushes load up. Crossing a rut diagonally and banging into the other side of the rut highlights this - steering, compression on suspension, compression in suspension radius/link bushes.
    Cheers
