Mmmmm, if you are going to a reputable LR mech then they should be checked at the MOST every 20K. We do some at 10K intervals if the vehicle does a lot of hard work. It is an easy 30 minute task, and no only the rocker cover and fan/ shroud need to be removed to do it. It's actually something that you and Ian should do anyway, it is not difficult and if you are tackling the series resto this'll be a piece of cake:D

There is a tutorial here I think, if not I can post up a step by step but I'm sure that someone on here already has?

Justin the only time the car goes into the garage is when we have something we cant tackle and a pink slip....

garage has not seen my car for a year and that was just for a pink slip...last time it went in was for the heater core and that was well over a year ago maybe getting closer to two now.

I have spoken to Ian he said he should be able to do it...as phil showed him how to do it on the 90 when they did the head

Good, I'd forgotten you guys have already done a head on the 90, the 300Tdi is the same as the 200Tdi in that department, both .208mm (.008") clearances, inlet and exhaust, hot or cold. Don't you just lurve simple engines:)

Definately something to check at least annually:)

The mob that did my major service and upgrade plus tweak were just shonky.

I went back and they replaced my fuel filter, said that it usually costs $50 just for filter. Sounds too much.
Anyway, they adjusted the tappets and now at 2300rpm, its much louder.

I will look up tappet adjustment on here and do it myself. .2mm feeler gauge should do it?

A lot of people use the throttle cable slack adjustment to adjust the idle speed. This'll upset achieving a proper smooth idle when cold and warm.

I went to a diesel shop and clipped a transducer to an injector line and we decided between us to set the idle to the lower limit of the figure quoted in the workshop manual (Don't have my RAVE to hand, think it is 720 +-50) but in DRIVE instead of park by slacking off the locknut and winding the idle speed stop (threaded rod).

This stopped the idle hunting in gear, and getting too excitable once warmed up.
