what colour is the smoke?
does it go away when up to temp?(under load? hot?, cold?)
still perform ok?
Hi, I am hoping for some advice
My disco smokes on start up, and acceleration. (which one does not??)
It smokes too much though. I replaced injectors, had the fuel pump done and had the turbo checked for pressure (is fine). I cleaned the intercooler (which was not too dirty anyway. The car has done 210K and has had a service.
On advice from someone I took the crankcase breather pipe off, and boy, that does blow a lot of smoke, so I had to reconnect it to the air inlet just before the turbo. It seems to me this fouls the air intake, but that is the way the beast is designed. Can anyone give me some idea of what to do to fix this car?
thanks!

Smoke is grey on start up (cold), when under load it looks more black.
Car starts quick, and performs fine (ish). When car is up to temp, smoke only when accelerating.
has any one played with your fuel pump sounds like it has been turned up to me

What exactly was done on the injector pump? I had a TDi injector pump done twice, the second time was by a pro with the right calibration gear. They found the first time it was worked on, all calibrations were way out. Hence poor power, poor economy and smoke.
As we know, black smoke is normally a sign of excess fuel.
All Tdis's blow a nice cloud of the black stuff when started, so I probably wouldn't worry about that.
If it blows black smoke under any acceleration, then the injector pump is possibly turned up too high, putting more fuel than can be properly burned into the engine, and thus the black smoke out the back.
It may also be a case of the engine not getting enough air, so check the air intake system. Is the air filter well blocked up, are any of the turbo hoses split or delaminating, are all the turbo hose joins tight?
Most Tdi's blow some black smoke under hard acceleration, so thats not a problem either.
If its all the time then getting a pro to tune the injector pump would be good, may also gain a few ponies as well.
As far as the breather line into the turbo intake goes, search for Provent.
Its an alternative breather filter that appears to work. Might be worth a read.
I have turned the fuel pump down a bit, but just loss of power, not smoke, so set it back where it was. The pump seems to have been done correctly. . The air filter is new, and I checked all the hoses. I will look into Provent..?..
The smoke seems to be more grey than black.. thanks guys..

The pump has been done with all new parts and been bench tested and reset to factory settings. Thanks, but I might leave this alone for now. As mentioned there is a lot of smoke from the crank case into the air inflow. Is this normal. Has anyone experimented with disconnecting this hose? Thanks.
