Thread: Disco 1 3.9 injectors

maybe you should list what usual suspects you have replaced, just in case there is something you have missed.

Items replaced so far
Dizzy cap,rotor,
plugs and leads,
new coil and ignition module,
stepper motor,
Maf
fuel filter and regulator
redone timing,
checked and cleaned all earth points,
new thermostat,replaced all vacum lines.
The starting probs have no set pattern happens when cold or hot some days starts fine with out probs but other days every time try to start it will crank over for anywhere from 5 seconds to 60 seconds before it fires up.

mmmmmm you have changed a lot but from your list you haven't done anything about the two usual suspects for poor starting on a disco..

The starter solonoid and more importantly the starter its self could be giving up.

I think I read somewhere also and I'm sure it was rick130 that said it, but can't remember whether or not is was on a disco....but a connection is notorious for coming lose on the fuel pump I think it was.

you should also check the condition of your battery...

Try this method of starting ...
Crank for 1/2 sec / STOP
Turn key off
Turn key on
Crank again for 2 sec .... Should fire

The problem of cranking long term is that you flood the motor real fast // This means you then have to start it with your foot "flat out" on the gas pedal to clear it's throat

Have already had the fuel pump out and cleaned and checked all connections.
Battery was tested when the prob first started.
So might have to investigate the starter motor then.
Was thinking injectors as when i pulled the fuel pump out it was full of crap and the fuel filter after 5000ks was getting fairly clogged up.The motor has done 301000ks so might be a build up of years of crappy fuel.

possibly but then if your filter was full of crap it should have done its job.....

I went through starting issues started over a year ago in the cold sometimes it would take 30/40 sec to turn over. doesn't sound long but it is. didn't always do it so thought it might be an earth, it tended to happen more on dewy mornings.

then as the year went on the car started doing stupid things like I would drive to the shops turn car off get in turn car on go to other shops just down the road turn car off, come back turn car on and nothing!! leave for 10mins and it would start with out a hiccup and be fine for weeks on end.....it started to happen more and more frequently and more so after a long drive but not something I could ever recreate.

I eventually bit the bullet and brought a new starter.....even in the mornings with ice on the windscreen I dont even finish turning the key before it fires. I wish I had changed it early the difference was unreal.

.....at 301ks if your on the original starter I wouldn't be surprised if that was your problem

Sounds exactly like the same sympyoms. So might have to investigate starter motor. Is there any particular way of testing it.
Has anyone had sucess with rebuilding them or is a replacement the better option.

you can get a new starter in from the uk for about $350 I thought there was no point rebuilding for that.......just try doing a search on the forum.
