Mike, I wouldn't think that a highly improbable occurrence has led to this situation. It sounds very much like the fettler is a fiddler. I've had 3 of these unbustable little engines in our family, and that's the operative word.
If there's been a valve train failure of some sort, the racket will have stood out like the proverbials!
SO, who knows until a person who is qualified to pronounce gets a chance to do so.

hey guys,
thanks for all your concerns, appreciate it alot.
Today i had the landy towed to a rover mech here in melbourne to fix her up and should get her back mid next week. as soon as he will take apart the head he will let me know whats wrong with it. Thing that i found funny was that before the service my disco was running perfect, always did the services on time not a thing out of place until i picked her up from THIS mechanic. Other funny thing was that he kept my landy for a further few days trying to fix the problem of the blow back with no success only to find that HE DID IT AGAIN!!!!!!
instead of oil coming out from the blow back effect i had DIESEL coming from the injectors, splattering out!!!!!!!! i dont know what he did in the few days all he said that he was not going to charge me for it!!!!
Anyway i will be taking it further thanks with your info's and the main thing is she will be fixed and running in no time. will keep you guys informed for sure.

That's why I do as much as I can myself. Oil and filter changes are not rocket science. Takes less than half an hour and you know it's been done right !
How on earth a qualified mechanic could put the wrong oil into an engine is beyond me. If he's not familiar with the vehicle surely he'd have to check first. Bl**dy cowboy !!!:2up:

With all due respect to the gooduns on board here that do a great job sadly there are some spanner spinners that don't check [or think or care] and just adopt the 'she'll be right' attitude. :(Quote:

But a 200/300 tdi is not what you would call "modern technology". The fuel system is Bosch mechanical, the injectors are non-serviceable, the heads are hardened alloy - in short it's from the 70's.
I would think that it's unforgiveable for any spanner to hide behind excuses, and if this situation includes lack of knowledge of the engine, then even I would investigate it at least a little bit!
If Simon gets a good result from RoverLand (and I'm sure he will), it's because the spanner is doing his/her job correctly.

Hey guys,
Well just got the call from the spanner and its not good news!!!!! As i said the head got sent away and it came back as being cracked in a few places and the valves being complety stuffed. Soooooo pretty much getting the whole top end done and its costing around the $3,500 mark.:(:(
he said the crack in the head would have been there for a while and the gasket was rooted and when they put the thicker oil in it would have pushed it over the edge and made worse damage.
On the bright side i guess at least i'll have a new top end with gasket and valves. Pretty much thats all of our savings gone and i guess we'll have to take it a day at a time. Thanks for all your help guys really appreciate it and lets just hope that the bottom end is fine!!!

Geez mate - thats a few $$$.
Reckon you'd be better to buy Clarkie's motor (only done 128K) for $2500 and then sell your bottom end to recover a few $$$.
How many K's has yours done??
