I have a Detroit soft locker, it's great. Sits in a cardboard box in my office, doesn't make too much noise, and doesn't take up much space. Some time soon I'm hoping I can fit it in my car

Yeah, todate the best is $1,100 for Detroit locker on the rear (6 week wait though. Supply only).

Unless you don't plan on fitting a compressor anyway then that isn't much cheaper than an air locker. If this is a price based thing.

Phone quote from a certain well known 4 x 4 supply and installer - air lockers front and rear of a D2 - with everything else to go with it to run it - $4k plus....

I think they retail for about $1300 each. Plus about $300 for the tyre compressor. Plus about $500 install each and $150 compressor install.

That is very guesstimate/rough but would be close I think. Makes $4050.

You can get an air locker centre without compressor etc, for about $1200-$1300, than an air compressor kit for about $200 (the little 'locker only" compressor) that includes- compressor, loom, switches (pressure and comp), you have to buy the solenoid seperate $65 then if you don't fit it your self there's the cost of fitting, not shore how much that would be.
So it should end up around $1500 + fitting
And if a detroit is $1100 thats all you need so about $300 for fitting (if you don't do it your self)
    So a total of $1300-$1400
    Not a huge price difference...

I'd look around a bit. Should be able to get one from the states for a lot less. Try Keith @ rovertracks or drive train specialists (dts).

I got front and rear tru-tracks from Keith @ Rovertracks - when the exchange rate was good it cost me $900 for both delivered and $500 to fit.

They work great in soft sand - I've driven along Rainbow beach with 36psi in the tyres no problem whilst the Patrol behind me struggled with 20psi or less in his tyres.

myself i would go for air lockers as i dont like autos in a lot of situations they are probably good, however ive seen many times the worst being when a mate tried to go around a tree on the high side of a bloody big rut and the thing just wanted to steer him into the rut ended up getting anather car to pull his front end where he wanted it,as for price depending on how hany your are the compressor and lines arent rocket science to fit and if you pull your centres out and take them in than you will save a lot of money, i remember in my jeep i pulled the whole housing(dana) out and gave them that and i saved heaps as they didnt need anather hoist, also remember for air lockers you only need the compressor once not for both ends
