GFC winch install with no Bullbar

This is my low budget approach to four wheeling and owning a bus in general. I got the D1 for $2.5K with only 170K on the clock and a full history. Not wanting to invest $1750 in a new bullbar and not finding any 2nd hand around Tas I went for the barless approach.

It's 6mm plate bent into a U shape with a front section for the fairlead to bolt to welded to it. It took a bit of teasing to get it all right but got there in the end. I'm no engineer so follow this concept at your own peril, but I'm pretty sure the Chineese heap of crap winch will blow it's bolt before any of my mounting does!

The winch is a very cheap internet special copy/same as T-max i think. The solenoid is probably the best bit of it all quality wise!!

    Total Costs:

    Winch 9500pd $380
    6mm U section $50
    6mm fairlead section $20
    Solenoid Tigerzz $110
    High Tensile bolts $30

    All up a $590 upgrade.

I'm no longer a comp driver, but wanted this to go with my snatch block for basic recoveries of either me or the caravan when I get adventurous with the family. If it saves me once it'll be worth it.

    Enjoy the pics

I rolled the cable on today and it dragged the Disco up a hill with the handbrake on. Nice effort. All seems ok

Nice work Devil, I'm doing a similar thing at the moment with mine, just making a whole bar, but a nice high approach angle one as I seemed to smack my nudge bar into everything before.

Where are you based DD? South or north? I like to check out what you did in the flesh if your down south. I did a similar thing on the rangie, got some 8mm plate and had it bent to fit between the chasis rails. Not in the same design tho, mine faced forward but I like your design too.

    Cheers,

Neat and subtle is nice for when the winch is not in use but there may be a problem when actually winching.
It is difficult to see the cable/rope going in and could lead to birdnesting, especially when winching at an angle, and in the dark.
I endured plenty of curses in the pic below ... total darkness, rain, and cable kept bunching up to such an extent that it couldn't be pulled out, and using motor to roll it out could make things worse.
After all that, I cut a window on top of the bumper, and plan to (but have not done) install an LED light to shine on the drum.

that's true and something I thought about so I cut a rectangle above the winch in the center of the grill. Firstly it was so I could get to the clutch lever but after I removed the plastic flappy bit under the radiator I can see the cable and all the worky bits.

The pipes for the gearbox oil cooler are rather close to the cable all the same, I should've left a bit more space there in case it does go pear shaped one day.

The dimensions of the bent up plate/cradle are 180H x 624W (the width b/w chassis rails) x 300D from memory.

I made it 280H to start with then cut it back to fit.

By the way PSI that's an unreal looking machine you have there. That mud looks errr challenging!

Stooge - I'm up North near Burnie and I'd be happy to show it to you one day for sure.

    Cheers

the winch manual says to leave it with the clutch disengaged, so do you guys tie the hook to the fairlead or just load it up a bit and leave the clutch engaged? Most 4x4's I see have the hook up tight to a tow point or the fairlead.

I have visions of the hook free spooling away until It grabs something and i do a forward somersault!!

Thats a good point PSI....but can't bird cage a synthetic rope which would be what I would put on a set-up like that safer and lighter

Read the Thread about one member in a car wash, how it engaged, you wouldn't want that to happen.
