I have some advice change your bloody mechanic.......
and before anyone jumps down my throat on the whole dont blame the mechanic thing. every time you take it in for something that appears simple it turns out to be a major drama.
is your mechanic a general man or a landy man? if he is general take it to a landy man and do your self a favour.
Simon, I agree this is a total horror story:mad:
With the cable adjustment, put the shifter in park, then remove the split pin and disconnect the cable from the trans shifter lever(LHS gearbox) The lever SHOULD be in the park position, IE if it springs a little one way then the adjustment was out. ondo the locknuts and move the ferrule along the threaded section of the cable so tha it drops easily through the hole in the lever. This should then be right. BUT, the cable shouldn't have been touched to remove the sump or valve body, the pinch bolt on the cable outer bracket attached to the LH gearbox mounting bracket may have been unbolted, thereby making the cable out of adjustment in relation to the gearbox itself. I would say that is what has happened.
Everyone makes mistakes at times, but You may need to find someone familiar with these vehicles...

Geeeez mate, sorry to hear your still getting grief! Cant add anything mechanical, sorry, but just think that when the issues are sorted your vehicle will be like new!
Thank guys for your opinions really appreciate it. i jump underneath to have a bit of a gander at the selector lever and i could actualy move it by hand and could hear a clunking sound from inside the sump. that was in park so i'm guessing it should not move at all. Anyway i'm taking her back tomorrow to my landy mech who did the motor to change the kickdown and have a look at some oil leaks so i'll get him to adjust the selector lever, dont really want to touch anything there in case i make it worse.
cheers simon
other thing i noticed is that when the car is cold she wont shift into second, as soon as she is hot theres no problem?????
could be oil???
What about the problem someone had a while ago about not putting the o-ring in between the auto filter and box, when the auto was serviced.
Doesn't affect the shifting into park etc, but won't it stuff up first to second?
Just throwing it out there. :p
An auto that won't shift from first when cold is usually caused by a sticking governor valve. The valve body is usually made of aluminum and the valve made of steel. If the valve is stuck in the valve body when cold, it will often free up when hot as aluminum expands about two to one on steel.
Dave.
Well finaly it all seems to be going great with my disco...i got the cable changed over and now can drive it without worry. did have the problem with the auto not changing when cold but it looks like it fixed itself as now in the mornings i just start her up and take off...thank christ for that.
cheers simon
