overheated disco - core plug problem

okay. i happened to find some spare time to check the thermostat out this afternoon....
seems like the little bugger DID indeed at least contribute to the problem...

I popped it in a pot of water and heated it up - but nothing happened... which was not really surprising, as for one the gasket was brittle (and this is an understatement!), it was literally baked to the thermostat, which itself looked awefull, and even the thermostat housing had SERIOUS damage underneath what appeared to have been the gasket at some point much earlier in time....:eek:

so ... my conclusion: immediate replacement of the thermostat.... and I hope I can find a new front part of the housing too, as it really looks bad!!...
well... and as I'll take the head off on the weekend anyway, I might as well check the waterpump out... my guess is if the thermostat already looks that ...deteriorated... the pump might carry some issues as well...

we will see!

... oh, and if anybody has some sort of experience bringing a core plug into a cylinder head... would be very much appreciated!

Well, you should be able to carefully (maybe even using some violence and magic spells) tap it into place. You may have to pull out the engine to gain better access, dependent on location of the plug.

the core plug seems to bring the least of worries now...
the head is finally off:clap2: but... :dbcry:... a scene of horror stands in front of me!!...

the pump isnt off yet, as one nice little nut decided to withstand all forces so far (..well, in fact it didnt exactely withstand them... its rounded off..... ) but I can only imagine what I will discover there... (it does still spin... or should I say one can still spin it without effort? but I think I will need to replace it anyway)

as all of the waterholes in the head/block are COMPLETELY blocked... I will drop the head to a shop to get it checked out, cleaned and possibly-maybe shaved off... but I'm not so sure how I will tackle the rest of the problem... I will need to somehow clean the block, check all pipes, check the pump, check the radiator,...

good oppertunity to do up the engine, i did mine 10.5 compression and a wade camshaft, they do a high torque cam for 215 brand new custom grind. and you can get a roll master cam gear set billit steel for about 140$ :) the missis would never let you but now that its stripped hey, she will never know ! good luck mate, the first bit is depressing but then it gets rilly exciting. :)

... yeah... funny you say that...
I am the "missis"... and its my car! :whistling: if i'd read your post earlier I would have considered..

the head and everything went quite well (usual probs you'd find in a 420k engine i guess)... we did about 1500km outback trip recently, and she ran beeaautiful :)
I'll now tackel timing belt replacement within the next few months (whenever the financial side allows it)
