    ZF to manual 300TDI

Looks like the block on my 300TDI auto is either warped or cracked, an expensive exercise to correct.I can pick up a motor from the wreckers that sounds ok,but it is from a manual. What do I need to swap over to fit onto my ZF auto, especially preventative measures ie is it possible to empty the fluid from the torque converter whilst it is apart. Can I get away with swaping over the kick down bracket on the injection pump or does the whole pump have to be changed?

You are changing over the motor only?

With the motor whatever you have on the existing motor you will need to transfer over to the new motor if it is not already there... I would assume that the fuel pump is there on the new one, so leave it alone and yes just swap the kick down brackets and cable etc.

Before you fit the new motor, good time to replace the timing belt.

Panic over.I have eventually got back to the 300TDI and on checking the water level cold, found it was up to the mark.Opened the bleed on the thermostat housing and topped it up with about a cup full, changed the expansion tank cap......and took it for a 100km run , the temperature never rose above the bottom of the thermometer symbol....air con on,up hill etc.I showed the old head gasket to the local engineering shop..no bad tracking to the water jacket so he doubted the block was sufficiently warped to cause leakage.A good tip he gave was when filling the cooling system use a large funnel or cut down plastic bottle on top of the thermostat bleed.Whilst keeping it full of water squeeze all the hoses and run motor to bleed out any residual pockets of air.
