    diff lock handle

hi everyone i was working on my 96 disco and seen that on the gear stick for hi and low there a diff lock if you push it to one side, but it doesnt stay there.
can anyone tell me what does it do and how to keep it locked in
    thanks everyone

    Hello mate,

If your put the clutch in and push it fowards and to the left that is low range diff lock and if your put it to the back and left that is High range diff lock. This locks the center differential ensuring even drive to the front and rear drive shafts. This does not work as a cross axle diff lock so it is still very possible to become "cross legged" in extreme articulation. Best to apply the diff lock when on slippery and or rutted or steep inclines pretty much in off road situations

Hope this was of any help!

    James.

I would really recommend you join a 4wd Land rover club and have some driver training

lol sorry i know it goes into low gear but what i meant was whats the differents from just puttin it into low or moving it to the right and into low.
cause when i do put it to the right and in low or hi it just falls back to the left, is it ment to say over to the left or what ?
ive had other 4x4 but this is my frist disco
    thanks liam

the hi lo lever should always be over to the right.....unless your on loose surfaces wher you likely to keep loosing traction then you have it over to the left to lock the center differential giving you the abilty to split the powere evenly between front and rear axle.

if you push it over to the left and it falls back to the right of its own accord then either your not pushing it over enough...(when you do a yellow light will illuminate on the dash) or you have something wrong

By the sounds it hasn't been used in a while, aparently they can get a bit sticky without use, most likely the linkages are abit stiff, if you can't get it in, if i were you i'd try free them up with a bit of spray or something, once you have it in try give it a solid work out on dirt road for a while (not on the black top)
