    Injector pump tuning

    Hi all,

We just returned from a 5000km trip up the south coast of NSW and into Katoomba, Bathurst etc and I was a little disapointed in the Disco.

Over the years the economy has been steadilly getting worse but then again ive been adding accesories so thats kind of understandable but when adding a 450kg camper trailer Im looking at around the 16 to 17l/100km range for a 300Tdi is a bit rich when the performance was also way way down on what it should be.

Even the slightest head wind meant that I was only capable of about 90 on the flat and back to 2nd up hills.

It has never had a issue with towing before, Ive had everything from horse floats to car trailers fully loaded behind it with very few issues but it seems like it hates the Jayco J8.

Im thinking that the injector pump might be out of tune as Ive put in a new set of injectors which made a difference to the smoke side of things but didnt change the power or economy all that much.

Minus the trailer it goes like a 300Tdi powered rocket (maybe rocket is not the right word for it) and the economy is around high 14s around city traffic to mid 12s on the Hwy with Roof rack, 32" allterrains, bull bar, winch etc.

I was expecting to be maybe looking at low 15's when towing but not 16's and 17's, I may as well have a V8 with those sort of figures, at least I would be able to over take then.

Any suggestions or has any one had similar experiences?

Hi casper, i to have a 300 tdi disco and jayco outback camper you do use alot more diesel, they are very heavy and have the aerodynamics of a brick! plus what you have loaded it and the car up with! but i think your 32 inch tyres has put a lot of load on it, it is only a 2.5 litre moter!
mine uses 11-12 litre around town and 9.5-10 on hwy, towing around 15 litres towing the jayco (1500 kg fully loaded) but i have had head winds blow it out to 19 litres per 100km. i would try towing with a standard set of tyres.
    cheers Land-e

Thanks Guys, I dont feel so bad anymore.

I hav'nt done the valve clearences recently so I may have a look at them, I have to replace the rocker cover seal any way as it's leaking along with the vac pump again ...

    Tanks again.

    Cheers Casper

Check the clearances, etc... but bear in mind that the economy on a TDi is much more variable than a V8 when you're working it hard.
