no I meant what brand bearings...think I paid about 8/9 bux for each seal on mine

Mine leak a little sometimes, I just top up when I do a service. A little oil makes a big mess, like blood, spreads a long way.

just called british 4wd and he quoted me $198 for a kit that has wheels bearings, swivel hub bearings and gaskets and this and that......alot of stuff there but cant afford $200 each if im going to do both sides.

i dont have any vibration coming into the steering wheel or any where else i just noticed the swivel hub seal leaking....do you really have to do everything else if your just changing the seal and bearings?????

ok cool so i take it that its not that big of a problem then, only thing i'm worried about is if the seal is broken can things like water and dirt get inside and cause more havoc????

mine have been leaking since i bought the car and ive done 15000ks just make sure your oil is full, im to busy trying to fix everything else on it

I just topped mine up before a 10000km trip, I havnt even bothered checking them since I got home. They may even take up and stop leaking for a while and then start again, you just need to be very AWARE of it. My veiw of what to do when the dollar is tight is to minimise the risk of further damage and potential failure. So yes I would quite happily drive it but would stay away from extreme 4 wheelin until you have repaired any little failure because when money is tight good old murphys law will come into play.

Replacing the seal is a bit messy but quite straightforward. You will have to take the hub off, have to drain the swivel pin housing, etc. Make sure you have the right tools at hand. I read somewhere about a short-cut method, cutting the seal at one point and putting it in place from behind, i.e without hub removal. This type of fix is definitely not recommended, although you may find some anecdotical evidence of it working. The seal has a little circular metal spring inside which, when clipped, will lose its efficency.
As pointed out already, the main issue is not oil leaking out but water/dirt getting inside. That's why I wouldn't wait too long. Any delay whilst still using the car regularly will only increase the possible damage, making it even more expensive to sort out later. A preferable option if you want to save a buck could be to fill the swivel pin housing with LR's very own "one-shot-grease" (sorry, I don't recall the parts number). As it is thicker than the oil it will not leak, but, of course, water and dirt will still be able to enter. And, if you have to disassemble the swivel pins for some reason you will have a real mess cleaning it...
