holes in my air intake from the snorkel..

    g'day all,

Was just changing my hose from the turbo to the pipe when i noticed air coming out from my flexi hose that i have hooked up to my snorkel, can that have some power loss due to the air excapeing???

it is a 3" flexi hose which i thought would be strong enough but obviously it isnt due to the bracking in the pipe while bending it..

any other solutions that could help it from cracking??? thought about duck taping the hole tube but would that really keep the air in???

    cheers simon

    Not from ther mate.
Only dirty(un filtered) air, no worse than picking air up under the bonnet. Is it rubbing on the pwr/str resivior too?
You must come over so we can have a look at things at some time.
Check your hoses to and from the intercooler.
Check for full throttle with the throttle cable.
Hand brake issue can be checked by seeing if the car can be rolled on a slight hill (Stop uphill and see if it rolls back in neutral).

    Cheers Kyle.

Pull it off as it really is doing nothing to help you anyway.

If relocate the air box back a bit and cut a hole in the side, you can glue in a PVC drain cap (the part you put on the end of a drain pipe which your drain grill fits into) which has an OD about the same size as the OD of the snorkle out let and then slide a bit of rubber hose over the top and secure with hose clamps.

You need to trim the flange to suit the shape of the air box but it gives you a good seal which is strong enough to handle the vibrations etc that it cops.

A good semi rigid epoxy resin is best I found, I used a Wurth one but thats rather pricey but Araldite semi rigid would surfice.

Rivit and glue a cover over the old hole and your done.

It will look factory and be heaps stronger as well as work properly.

But as far as answering your question goes, it would not make a lot of difference to your performance as it is pre filter any way, just means your snorkle is a decoration as it will be picking up air from the engine bay, probably dirtier air than if it still had the original horn on the front of the airbox.

    Just a thought Simon,

a flexable hose that wasn't designed to live in a high temperature enviroment would become even more flexable then normal when heated.

Add to this negative internal pressure at high constant throttle openings then its quite possible that it could flatten out and become quite restrictive too.

I agree with Casper, pull it off and get rid of it and fit a good quality rigid fitting but make sure you seal it up really well along with blocking off the original air inlet to the airbox.

Doing this would also get the piping and thus the air used for combustion away from all the hot bits, namely the engine / turbo etc.

    Cheers,
    Terry

Personally, I'd look at changing the filter box as that ducting has to go around the houses at the moment.

If you have a look at the 300TDi Camel Trophy vehicles, they changed the air filter housing for a 200TDi one. It makes a lot more sense...

I would say that the heat from the exhaust housing on the turbo has killed your flexi pipe mate. Wont affect performance as such as the air there is in vacuum and not positive pressure, so you wont be loosing "boost" as such. Re route it, get it away from the turbo and get it solid mounted..

Yeahh agree with everyone, especialy about the heat, where the breaks are are right under/in front of the turbo manifold, will be sussing it out tomoz, go check out bunnings for some fittings and mount it prop..cheers all

    Air filter issues!

I used a cylinder type air box out of a early model disco- cut the snout off and fitted a 3" starter from a turbo/ after parts supplier- an EA falcon air hose fitted to the outlet of the air box and it all works a treat! The snorkel connects to the adaptor with a short( 4") piece of turbo hose- cost me about $25.00 and an hour of my time!!!!! The cylder air box fitted perfect with the wiper bottle and snorkel outlet!!
