Steve, When I did mine I did not remove the relay. I tried to do this method before I got hold of the other info that I posted here. I spent considerable time trying to find this relay and could not find it.
Mine is a 96 and it does what you said. Turn key on, light comes on, blinks once and then stays on until I drive off.
If your plug is the same as the picture it is an OBD2 connector.

Yeah, my connector looks exactly like your picture. Might invest in the iPhone OBD2 gadget that was advertised somewhere else round here in that case.
But, in any case, the weird thing was, unless I removed the relay, the blink codes would not come out. I wonder actually given that mines the same year and has the same connector, that may mean my relay is buggered, which is consistent with still having an Antilock light on even after all the codes are cleared...
I'll pick up a new relay over the weekend and see what happens.

Where is this relay? Is it easy to get to? If it is a standard 4 pin just swap it with another one to test it. There are about four million of them under my dash.

Great suggestion - switched the relay for one of the other ones in there that was the same specification.
No more ABS light! It comes on, flicks off for half a second, comes on again until you get to about 7k/h and then goes out.... It does exactly what it says on the tin!!
I've got no rear power windows now so I suspect that's what the relay I swapped it was for. But I can't remember if they ever worked, so I might have a couple of additional problems - heheh - I'm getting used to this.

Steve, it's behind the glovebox on the left hand side of the fascia. Out with the glovebox, 4 screws, et voila! Relays galore on a bracket. AFAIR, there's ABS load relay (2nd from back on the left bank, normally open) and warning relay (2nd from front on the right bank, normally closed) - sounds very Paris, non?
Substitute for solutions.

I'm still not happy with the brakes though, they feel like there's way too much braking happening on the front - and the ABS kicks in at times where I wouldn't necessarily expect it to on a lighter car. Having said that, I don't believe it's an ABS fault, like I say it just feels like 90% of the braking power is being supplied by the front end.

Renewing an old Post.......
Anyone know if u can successful disable the ABS on a '96 D1 w/o having the ABS light remain on at all?
Mine now comes on every now and then and I've never really liked it offroad, so if the ABS can be disabled totally, leaving the braking like any non-ABS vehicle, then I would be keen to know how to do it?

Pull the plug off the unit under the bonnet and then remove the globe in the dash, or cut wire and put in a switch in case you need to reactivate it for a RWC.
