    V8 - Where's your temp run

    Hi all,
Was wondering where the nornal temp range is on the V8's

Mine sits on the half way mark,
i usually like to see temp gauge range from 1/3 to 1/2 way mark.
So I went and bought a 74 degC thermostat and put it in, thinking this would bring it down a little
    Temp still sits on haf.
Looked at the old themostat and found it was made in the USA with 160 stamped on the back, assuming this is 160F that works out to 71 degC.
So im still where i started!!

Continuously sits slightly below half way, irrespective of how warm or cold it is outside. 3.9 V8 runs an 88 degree thermostat.

Do not fit a thermostat rated below about 82 degrees.

Reason is the enrichment signal to the ECU from the temp sensor does not cut out until engine temp reaches around 81 degrees. If you run a 74 you'll always have rich fueling.

Mine, like yours, sits at about halfway too.

Mine also sits at halfway most of the time. I have a TM2 temp monitor fitted and read a block temp of around 80-90C when loading up the engine offroad (hill climbs etc).

    Hi Guys,

I could do with a bit of educating.

I'm not particularly mechanically minded, but could someone explain the operation of a thermostat to me?

I was of the opinion that a thermostats sole purpose for being is to close the coolant circuit while the engine heats up, then opens when said temp is reached to cool the engine bla bla bla......

I thought that the thermostat set point had very little to do with the operating temp of the engine as it would always be above the close temp of the thermostat? I kinda (I'm guessing mistakenly) thought that operating temp would be dictated by radiator surface area and air flow, engine load, coolant condition and flow and the CSA of coolant galleries (the same could be said of the engine oil as well I guess)?

Does a thermostat open and close as driving conditions change? Once again thought it just opened at temp and stayed opened until it cooled again once the engine had been switched off, with the other parts of the circuit mentioned above being the greater contributers to operating temps?

    Thanks in Advance.

    Pando.

Thanks for that info - I also have a block temp unit and it will vary from around 74C to 86C - depending on whether I am in an 80 K zone or at traffic lights with air conditioning on, and was wondering what the normal range is, so you have re-assured me it is in the normal range.

IMHO, the only difference that the opening temp of the thermostat makes is, how quickly your engine gets up to operating temp, related to the outside air temp.
