Just got given an ES Discovery! , need some help :)

    Hey guys..

My old man upgraded and decided to give me his old 1997 ES Landrover Discovery, its a v8 and has done 210,000kms... leather interior, dual sunroofs.. etc etc... shes abit rough inside and out, but its just going to be my work car and ill take it up the beach occasionally! im on the Sunshine Coast QLD.

Anyway, i was hoping some of the experts on here may be able to help me out with a few issues!

    1. the passenger seat is stuck half down!!! (its electric) the switch broke a few years back, and ive tried running a cable to the battery and hooking it to the switch..but the recline part wont come back up, is there a manual way to put it back to its upright position?

    2. the clutch fan has ceased, it just spins with the motor... car doesnt get hot, but its annoyingly loud... i priced up a fan and was told i need the mechanical part of it , and its around $250! .. damn! .. are there any Flexi fans that bolt straight on?? like the ones you see at Repco and stuff for around $60...

    3. is there a DIY guide on how to remove the door trims, to adjust the door handle! its very tight.. i was told there is a nut that can be adjusted...

ummmm, thats all for now.. haha, i really hope someone can help me out!

    thanks guys

Invest and get a RAVE disc from the shop section. It'll show you what to do.

For the seats, there should be a hole near the electric motors somewhere. That should let you return the seat to the upright position with a screwdriver to manually turn the cable.

For the fan - sometimes the Ford version from a similar aged sedan works if you trim the blades.

The Ford Viscous will only work on engines with the old V-belt, and has a LH thread,
The Disco Being a 97, it will have a sepentine and the viscous coupling has a standard thread so you physically can't screw the Ford one on.

Yeah $250 seems to be about the standard 4 a new one.
    ERR3443 is the part no,
    but looky here alot cheaper

so in regards to my fan issue, is the viscous all i need to fix it? you cant turn the fan by hand, but it works when the motor is running.. it just permanently turns with the motor, it sounds like a big truck fan!!!!

can anyone have any photos on where this screw is on the electric seats to manually wind up! it really does sux having the passenger seat on a 45 degree angle!

The viscous coupling sounds like it has seized,
It's not supposed to be permanently locked that way, basically it works like a slipping clutch, depending on the temp of the air thats come through the radiator, theres a little heat coil on the front of them.
They usually still roar at start up, but free spins at normal running temp and kicks back in when detecting more heat.

But yes, a new coupling will fix that, just refit your old fan blade to the new coupling and screw it back on the waterpump.
    Easy job.
    Luke

P.S For future ref, The coupling can stuff up in opposite way to yours, as in continually free spinning when engine getting hot, and not drawing air through the radiator, but you shouldn't have to worry about that 4 a while if you fit a new 1.

a seized fan is dangerous because the fan will over speed meaning the blades could fly off. It's also really noisy but at least it actually cools the motor. You just have to cough up and get a new one (been there myself), you might also want to pull the rad at the same time and get it rodded/cleaned as the internals could be blocked (they usually are) and you may find that the engine will overheat with the new fan couping fitted (mine did) simply because it is speed limited, unlike your seized unit. Welcome to LR ownership!!
