Should I buy a D1?

Go the V8 Auto route if you want towing performance, or beach driving and off road superiority, + that sweet V8 burble, LPG if touring.
Diesel requires more maintenance and service, replace Timing belts and tensioners every 80,000klms, oil and filters every 5K to 10K, Parts are expensive and unless you can do the work yourself you will need a good cheap mechanic.For the cost of replacing a warped 300TDi head you could rebuild an entire petrol V8.
Performance wise the V8 is streets ahead, but fuel consumption in the V8 is around 16 to 20L/100klms compared to 8 to 10L/100klms for the diesel, choice is effortless cruising and off road ability with that loverly V8 burble (I'm biased), or slower, noisy, but cheaper, Regards Frank.

Well i own a 300tdi D1 and have had some problems with it due too not getting serviced regulary and just overall not being looked after. It has just done over 350,000K's but just got a engine rebuild, new turbo and a second hand injector pump put in. Right now she is running bloody great compared to before, i can notice a big change in power and performance which is great.

I can vouch for the 300tdi in the way of fuel consumption being very good around town and even better when going on tours or 4wding out in the bush. Yes they are a high matinance rig and some parts could get quite heavy on the wallet but there are soooo many places to get these parts from at different prices its not funny. wish ya luck on your quest of finding the ultimate rig!!!!!!!!

GO THE DIESELS!!!!!!!!!!! lol sorry had to put that in....

not to mention the servicing of the V8...
plugs leads, coils and amps letting go with heat. slipped liners, cracking expansion tanks.....

...and plummetting market value, no useful fuel range, intank fuel pumps, airflow meters, stepper motors....

Tdi maybe slower, but is a better prospect IMHO. Ex UK, new 300Tdi cylinder heads are quite cheap now:)

As many others have said go for the later Discovery with a 300Tdi i myself have a 98 300Tdi Manual and i love it! but i do daily wish it was a range rover...

Having owned a V8 Auto, a Tdi Auto and a Tdi Manual, in my book the Tdi Manual wins hands down. You don't need a V8 for towing performance or beach driving or even genuine performance. And parts are no more expensive than for the V8. There is no way the V8 is better off road! LPG is fine if you are willing to sacrifice load space. Drive both and see what you like

JC, I'm after a head for my 300TDi, whereabouts can I get one of these heads, any idea of the cost of frieght, I priced an alternator from the UK recently, was $186 AUD but the frieght was $150AUD+, ended up buying local for less, $330AUD, is it viable to get a head from the UK, Regards Frank.

And you'll go through more MAFs than I will injector pumps:twisted: And was that injector price for each or all 4, if each you need to shop elsewhere. The V8 was about average (I've owned one for 4 years - but driven a few) I do miss the V8 burble, but not the fuel bill.

Why would I go through MAF's, there's no moving parts, never ever had a problem with MAF's, injectors $186 each, Regards Frank.
