Poor running & stalling
Hey all,
My 98 v8 Disco is give]ing me **** (again
)
It was running fine before two trips to Brisbane airport in very heavy traffic that saw it begin to run very rough, and nearly stall.
It's now running crap all the time, and it will stall if left on idle up to temperature.
Symptoms;
Hard to start from cold
Very hard to start from hot.
idles badly
Hesitation on revving from idle, and hesitates numerrous times up the rev range esp WTO.
Plugs fouled & sooty
Temp gauge sits in the middle & looks fine
Blows smoke & sooty tail pipe.
I've recently changed the vaccuum adv. unit for a slightly different rough running problem, so not likely to be that.
I at first thought it was crap gas so topped up with Vpower & added injector cleaner - 30 km and it's no different.
I've blasted the MAF with cleaner and no changes.
If i disconnect the MAF while running it stalls.
Any ideas?

guys - please disregard this thread for now as I may have fixed it.
Dumb ass here didn't plug the connector back into the MAF after cleaning it.
It seems to be a lot better but still missing on WOT and blowing smoke.
Maybe just soot from earlier rich running so I'll take it for a spin to blast some more cleaner through.

Yes that would do it!! But I am surprised it runs so poorly . usually they are just too rich and use lots of juice in "Limp Home Mode".
So i would also have a look at plugs, leads, rotor, dizzy cap.

Update
Well I've still got the problem after much faffing about
Work done so far;
Changed plugs which looked a bit knackered
Changed leads which were absolutely knackered
Check dizzy cap - no cracks, seems in good order
Cleaned contacts in dizzy
Cleaned rotor head
Cleaned contacts on coil
Cleaned MAF
Disconnected MAF - engine stalls
Vacuum advance changed only two months ago & still hold vacuum.
Results;
Car ran much better immediately although there was still a noticeable slight misfire.
I drove the car for a week or so and found the symptoms were returning and have now become almost as bad as before
I checked the new plugs and found that the front cylinder plugs were half black & half cream! Not wet, but like some one has painted a sooty line down the ceramic.
I thought maybe the fuel's not getting through adequately so I've just replaced the fuel filter.
No change & I think the old one was still fairly new.....
I've got basic tools like sockets & multimeter but no proper car tools (more used to bikes really)
I'm thinking the next to go is the coil - waddya all think?

There is a T-piece in your breather line coming off your plenum chanmber and going to your tappet covers.
Inside this t'piece ther is a brass orifice that gets blocked with carbon. clean it out with some carby clean and you will be surprised with the results.
We do it all the time to the v8 up here. It is something people for get about especially if it stalls and runs rough while under load.
Give that a go

Thanks & a good tip.
I cleaned it out with brake cleaner & a match stick.
There was a significant amount of gunge in there which can't have helped, but it's not fixed the rough running.

This problem sound almost identical to mine and done most thing you have. I have an Amp module on it's way so I see see how it goes and will let you know. Hope you get to the bottom of it soon. I will be watching for the results.
Cheers, David.

Does anyone have the figures & tolerances I should expect if I meter out the coil?

Check the IAC valve on the back of the plenum is tight, it has 3 allen bolts, everyone I have ever checked has been loose. I would remove it anyway and clean the plunger tip and it's seat in the plenum.
This valve is called the Idle Air Control valve it has a wiring loom connected, a large hose to the front of the throttle body and a smaller hose to the fuel pressure regulator. It seems this valve has a habit of causing these symptoms, check it out and let us know the results, Regards Frank.

Sorry - I've checked that already, just forgot to list it
At least I think so - it's only one bolt though - about 20mm & the plugers comes out with the bolt.
I'll check it's tight again though.
