Best position for your roof racks????

After picking up a set of heavy duty Rhino racks for $10 then adding a basket, highlift jack and long handled shovel as well i'm just curious as to the best position to place the racks. i wont be putting anything heavy in the basket just sleeping gear and tent but as we all know those highlift jacks arent exactly light. i was told it was not healthy to place it above the rear axle but some where around the middle of the truck. at the moment i have it so the legs of the racks are sitting where the pillars are as thats the most strongest part of the rig up there, what ya reckon???

as usual thanks guys for your feed back

    cheers simon

I have the same racks and i put the rear most one just near the back of the alpine windows and the front one just near the dip in the roof, shouldnt put more than 100kg gross so placement is not really an issue - can also reach the rack easily when standing on the rear step.

    Thanks dullbird..

i want to put them as you have and how loanrangie said he has his but is it a problem with that much weight over the rear axle say when you go camping having the back full of gear and also the top on the racks???

i got the shovel holder and highlift jack holder for $25 each as they where display models they used to show to customers but they retail at around the $40 mark EACH!!! which i think is a bit steep...

Mine are in the same place as Lou's, weight shouldnt be a problem as you really shouldnt have anything more than tent/sleeping gear/clothing up on these type of racks anyway. Heavy items should be in the car or in a trailer, i'm building a trailer as we wont get all the gear needed for 2 kids and 2 dogs in and on the disco.

I dont know about the weight thing Simon

but you shouldn't be putting that much weight up there anyway...its dangerous.

However it was always my impression that your better putting weight over the axles perhaps I'm wrong but that's the way I was always told. Also my rear springs are stiffer so can take some weight on them.

Here is a pic with the roof top tent on

These were the good old days when the car worked

Hi Simon, I have been told that puting them in the middle balaces the car alot better and steering is improved. Also the air passes under it easier for less air resistance. I am putting mine at the rear though as it looks better on the car with the factory bar on the front.
Where did you get the basket from and how much are they if you dont mine me asking. Looks alot more solid thank the wire ones.

    Cheers David.

Well thats what i thought it would be better there so it balances out but now i'm thinking to put it to the rear as loanrangie said you can access the basket more by standing on the rear step/bar.

i got the basket from Autobarn for $119 and which was suposed to be $280 lol. they made a mistake with the codes for the basket and i had already paid for it at $119, so being there nearly 45mins later after kicking up a stink they let me have it for that price. Good basket though very strong, powder coated great as its not so big.

    cheers simon
