Over Heating Issues 1996 3.9 V8 D1

Hi, can anyone please give any advice on getting the Viscous coupling off. I have read many posts with no real joy. I have read the Rav CD but am trying to do it without the correct tools as this is a one off install (I hope). I have a spanner to fit the 36mm nut between the fan and the Viscous coupler but can't get the pulley to spot spinning. I've tryed stuffing a ragg in the belt and tryed to jam the pulley with a bar but no good.
Looking from the front of the car towards the engine I am trying to turn the nut anti clockwise as it's a right and tread (1996 V8). I could get a bit of a turn clockwise so the nut is not seized, just cant stop the pulley moving.
Has someone go a picture of the correct tools as I might be able to Fab something up. I think I understand it's a thin spanner next to another tool that locks the pulley.
Any advice would be appreciated.

If you give the spanner a sharp tap with a hammer (carefully) it should loosen the nut. Then you can spin it off by hand.

I give up:mad:. I just can't seem to get the Viscous off. As Big John said I have given it countless sharp hits while trying to stop the pulley turning but just can't hold it.

Looks like the right tool is required. Does anyone know if it can be hired or where I can get one from, I can get anywere in Melbourne. The ones I see online are to expensive for a one off job.

Any other ideas guys.

WHICH DIRECTION IS OFF?? ....
... Easiest way to tell is ... To get the fan nut off ... HIT IT in the direction that the fan turns .... To TIGHTEN it up .... HIT it in the REVERSE direction that the fan turns

Your's is a serpentine belt .... So (i think) the direction I'm showing will UNDO your nut

You don't have to hold nothing ... just give the spanner 3 SHARP HARD HITS ... and it's off .... I'm using a 12" crescent

Thanks Mick 90 RR, It's good to see I'm hitting it the right direction. I'm doing what you show in the picture but when I give it a hard wack the pulley slips on the serpintin belt. Maybe the V belts hold the pulley tighter. Also my Altinator is up much higher and reduces some of my swing to give it a real belt. I'll give it a good soak of CRC tonight and persist tomorrow. At least I'm going the right way.

Then use a "Gimpy" ....

The one on the Left is a good weapon .... but the coloufull one in the middle looks grouse .....

as they are heavy, but don't require much of a swing .... ALSO give a tension pull on the spanner with your spare hand, as your hitting it

AS it is the shock of the hits that loosen it ... not the length of the swing


REMEMBER ..... check the direction that the fan turns before giving it another go ....

Ok I'll bring out the big guns. Yes the way you are doing it is the way my fan spins, anti clockwise looking towards the engine.

I just took mine off this afternoon. I jammed a screw driver (with a square shaft) between the 2 pulley attaching nuts then used a shifter to undo. Do this at own risk as if you slip you might break fan blades.
If your handy with a couple bits of flat steel, you could make up a "Y" and drill 2 holes in to the ends, then screw your pulley bolts into this and fabricate a tool to prevent the pulley turning

Davo "1" - Disco "0". I finally got it off, now I can sleep easy. I must have been channelling It'sNotWorthComplaining while I was in the shed. I came up with a very similar solution to what he suggested. I took out a pulley bolt and screwed a large piece of flat to the pulley to use as a leaver to stop it turning. Then got a spanner and gave the Viscous bolt some good wacks and hay presto it cracked the tread. As soon as the tread cracked it just spins off.
Thanks for all your support guys, I was getting a bit annoyed with it.

Pick up the new Viscous tomorrow so hopefully it will be all good.

dont worry, your not the only one to get stuck with this. When I broke some fan blades on mine out in the bush, 3 other blokes that I was with all had a go a getting the nut undone (as well as myself) to no avail.
I eventually drove home with it as is and went to my local friendly LR man who had the tools to do it. He had a bigger hammer! ;)
