Get the V8 on gas.
I have had my 1995 D1 V8 on gas since approx 60,000 klm's in Aug 1999, and have now done 345,000 klm's. The only ongoing drama has been to change the spark plugs every 20,000 klm's, or else it starts to backfire.
It still runs as good as ever after 285,000 klm's on gas.
There is no way I could have afforded to run on petrol for all those years.

Well I do love a V8...I'm actually finally selling my 1967 XR Falcon wagon which has a factory 289 V8 on gas and getting this Disco instead. The Falcon is amazing but it needs someone who can spend a lot of time and patience fixing the rust in the body and the other issues that all old cars get. It's a great car though, very sad to see it go, runs beautifully it just needs about $6000+ thrown into it which I don't have.
Plus I want to be able to go off road and do a bit of camping and I just love the way the Disco drives so I'm pretty excited about the change.
You definitely can't beat a good V8 :D
I'm getting a pre-purchase check done on it next Monday in Geelong and providing all is well we'll see what happens after that.

Yep same here - gas no probs if setup properly. :D
My last D1 was a V8 on gas and it ran perfectly on both fuels all the time.
As mentioned make sure the electrickery side of things is strong.
The only slight downside for me was the range on gas as I wanted to do more long distances.
If I still had the full size original petrol tank then that wouldn't have been a problem either.
I had the undefloor gas tanks (fantastic) but a piddly quarter panel petrol tank that reduced range alot when on petrol.

good luck with the purchase. There are also at least 3 land rover specialist work shops that convert to gas so if any problems do arise there are specialists around who can fix it.

Ritters do mixer only conversions. The other 2 do gas injection.
BTW I have gas injection on my 4.6 D1 and love it! No loss of power or economy and no problems either.

I'll second all the previous comments re running on gas. My V8 has been on 12 degrees for 120,000ks. Get best leads available and no backfires. Some installers set up rich to avoid backfiring. I used to get 130km out of a 60l tank, when I bought it. Now it gets 300km.

Well all your comments have filled me with a lot more confidence about a gas Disco...I'll just make sure the electric side of things is always spot on.
I've been trying to sort out some kind of pre-purchase check but the closest guy to Werribee that can look at it tomorrow is the guy at Romsey Land Rover and that's a big hike. Was going to put it in for an RACV check but that's a cool $300 worth and they need it for a whole day which the seller can't do this week because he still needs the car. Who knows...I'll sort something out. It is a very nice one though so half of me thinks an RACV check wouldn't tell me that much anyway.

When you open the bonnet check the black box on the Mass Air Flow Meter where the electrics plug in, it should have a silver plate on it with a big Land Rover stamped on it. If it is all black it is an after market one and they can have economy issues.
