Smile Boost guage install?? please help

Hi guys, i'm new and i've had a bit of a look around but can't find an answer to my question.
I've just bought a 96 tdi disco and want to install a boost guage, now the problem i have is i don't know where to tap into, i've read a fair bit on these boards but it all has to do with upgraded turbos and elecronic guages. Mine is a totally stock disco and the guage is just a fairly cheap one ($100) from supercheap.

Also i'm about as mechanical as a packet of chips, but i have a friend who knows a few things helping me, he's pretty much only worked on turboed fast fours and rotarys and sent me to find out some stuff, so if you can be pretty specific about what goes where i'd stoked.

I thank you all in advance for any help you can give me.

p.s. i want to thank every one for the instructions on how to get the tacho going again after it died, it took me all of 5 minutes to search for an answer.

tell your rice boy mate that it goes on like every other boost gauge he's ever fitted.

theres a convenient stud point down near the back of the intake manifold thats excelent for drilling out and tapping to take the fitting for the sense line if you want to read whats going into the cylinders and like all ricers you can just tap the wastegate actuator line if you want to read whats coming out of the turbo. (remove the manifold before drilling to prevent swarf from going into the pots

if you want to get really specccy...

shift the sense line for the boost compensator to the port for the waste gate actuator tap the manifold and use that fitting to drive the boost gauge and the waste gate actuator.

I tapped the conveniant stud point at the back of the manifold.
found the boost acheived from there was dead on 15psi (or 14.8? :P)

I was thinking to move the wastegate actuator to the manifold too, but didn't think that it would be of any benifit as the max boost was being acheived even with the intercooler, etcetc.

is there an actual benifit to move this anyway??

the benifit of the mod is that you get your boost control off of the manifold which is after the intercooler rather than off the turbo which is before.

this compensates for the flow resistance and the pressure drop caused by the charge air cooling that occours in the intercooler. this means a quicker boost rise as the waste gate stays closed for longer and more power and higher boost pressure.

Putting the boost compensator feed off of the turbo wastegate rather than the manifold means that the pump goes to max fuel earlier on for the same reason.

in reality its only a handfull of KPA difference in boost pressure which may not show up on a cheap gauge but it will help your economy or power depending on how you use your right boot.

Very interesting... compensated boost.. could run into problems if you have a pressure leak though yeah?? Would still be trying to reach the boost threshold but would never get there because of the leak, or have i interpreted this the wrong way?

    dead on...

with the waste gate actuator running from the manifold if you blow the intercooler or a hose then you have a very real chance of over spooling the turbo if you dont pick up on it.

Thats why I usually do this mod in conjunction with a boost gauge and a set of instructions to watch the gauges and listen to the engine.

I consider that the gauges in a vehicle should be confriming what you already know about what is going on in and around the vehicle. When they dont read how you're expecting its time to investigate whats going on.
