    No more rear drive.

    Out for a play yesterday, and the time came to recover a mates s2 disco from a hill, which involved maneuvering around it and attempts to drag it up the hill whilst it was on its diffs with rope.

    I had front and rear lockers engaged, and took up the rope tension, putting some load on now and then a mechanical bang and i notice my rears are no longer spinning.

    I haven't broken a uni or the rubber coupling, and the tailshaft spins, but no drive to the rears. I doubt the ARB centre has broken, and it it were one axle broken then other with locker on will still spin. Has this ever happened to anyone before?

    ps (ended up with one wheel drive by the end of the day because of a broken cv trying to get out up another hill in front wheel drive.)

    You have broken two axles or the centre or possibly the pinion.

    Is it as simple as the center diff lock in the transfer case disengaged (as it can with a bang if it was not fully engaged) and all drive went to the front?

    I was interpreting the propshaft turning to mean there was drive down the propshaft, but none to the wheels.

    unfortunately not, that was the first thing i checked after it happened. Its an ARB centre, so i highly doubt that it is the culprit. I also doubt both axles let go at once.

    Just looked up RAVE, it must be the pinion that is broken, it fits all the criteria.

    Although its not something I've heard of before.

    Some more info, i have 34inch super swampers on, with heaps of traction. they did not spin as i increased load, then Bang!

    By the way it let go, im leaning against stripped splines, also after there was no sound coming out of the diff, so im thinking a fairly clean snap of the pinion shaft. but we will see, i will pull it apart this week and post results.

    The Outcome Is!;

    Two broken axles, the short/driver side broken about 100mm from the diff end, the long/passenger side broken about 75mm from the hub end.
    The passenger side needed taking off the hub and stud axle to get to the axle, the driver side needed a telescopic magnet to pull the piece out.

    So, being that i have spare axles it turns out to be an easy and cheap fix.

    Just a question; how do you remove a cv from its axle, so i can swap sides with it?
