    front end rattles

    Hi all,
Recently I bought some 2" king springs for my 92 tdi.
Over the course of a w/end,my mate and I put them in.[smilebigeye
]Much nicer to drive than the old wornout coils I had in it before. The shockies(pedders)I've left as is.
Whilst going to & from work/shops/mates place etc, there is this metallic clicking type of sound(something like dropping a few washers together in your hand).
At first it was just the r/hand side, but now its doing it on the left as well.
We've replaced the rubbers on the fr coils, checked that everthing is tight, but still cant find where the noise could be coming from.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

Check you have not over tightened the shock mounts, especially the lower ends. A mate recently bought a Disco and had some suspension work done by the service place who sold it. Somewhere along the way someone had WAY overtightened the shocks, deforming the washers to the extent that there was metal to metal contact with the shock mounts on the axle. The rubbers were RS as well, having been chopped up by the now ragged washers.

    update

Well I found out the other day that the front muffler baffles were shot.....
Today, had it down to the muffler guy for the front muffler to be taken off for a straight thru pipe..
Then it was down to the mechanic for the tighten-up of the front wheel bearings(replaced roughly 1800 k's ago). All good.
Drove home(22k) then shut down engine......rattle still there..........

Could it be the engine mounts--how to tell?
Everthing else has been on the front end has been checked for tightness and it all ok.

Any other ideas would be welcome...

one of the mounts in the radiator/condenser might be shot ditto for the shroud mount or the heat shield over the turbo (if it still there)

Ive also had the bonnet prop cause hard to trace rattles.

I don't know if your starter motor has a heat shield like the V8 ones, but if loose can rattle too.

If it is a tdi, the flexible coupling in the exhaust can make the exhaust rattle when they're old, also that big metal thing on the steering damper. Mine's loose. I have a real rattle when I shut the engine down.
