My D1 manual transmission is a bit noisy and clunky...is this normal?

(I've got tonnes of questions I know )

My Disco is a manual V8, and it also has a pretty heavy duty clutch in it...I don't know if this is standard or something the previous owner fitted for towing but he did stipulate that it's a heavy duty clutch which "takes some getting used to" so I was thinking he put it in.

Obviously when gears are engaged and changed through the course of driving there are bits that move in and under the car and it makes some noises, I'm probably just not used to hearing these noises as loudly as I can in my Disco. It seems like the kind of car that you can hear pretty much everything that's going on but I just wanted to get an idea if this is just a 4WD thing because this is my first 4WD...or if I should be concerned.

When I engage the clutch it makes a bit of a clunk sound and then when I shift gears, particularly between 1st and 2nd it also makes a fairly pronounced "clunk" from under the car. The changes aren't that smooth particularly between 1st and 2nd but I can tell that there is a bit of play in the manual gearbox anyway and I'm definitely still getting used to the heavy duty clutch.

Is a serious 4WD like a Disco just mechanically noisier in general?

yep theres 2 primary sources for that clunk most frequent is the a frame ball joint second its the gearbox output splines into the transfer case input gear.

my advice is to ask the forum nicely if theres someone else in your immediate area with the same type of disco as you have in about the same general state of modification (body lifts, suspension lifts, engine mods K's) and ask them to take you for a short drive in their vehicle and then let them take you over the same drive in yours so you can get a direct comparison.

or theres plenty of blokes on the forum who are happy to chuck the Mk I's over a vehicle for a nominal (beers n a Gday) fee.

On that note be sure to stick ya mit up if theres a trip on in the area or a learning day by one of the local clubs like GCLRO.

    Oh on that note.

Theres no such thing as too many questions OR a stupid question. Only a question that you were smart enough to think of but too dumb to ask.

If you have the earlier gearbox/transfer case (the one with reverse up and to the left), then they are notorious for it.

They have a bucket load of slop in them when they get a few miles on the clock.

What BK said about meeting up with other for a day out is a great way to compare and swap Ideas. Keep an eye on upcoming events or give a couple of week notice and put a trip up your self. Alway up for a day out. If you want to head bush Wombat State forest out your way and a fun day out. Everyone is alway happy to show of what they have done.

I've got the gearbox with reverse to the right and down. Definitely will be looking for some of the meets so I can compare notes and get a better idea of what I should expect from my Disco so I'm not asking too much from it...god knows it's never going to sound like a Rolls Royce

I would really like to get the gear changes and the clutch a bit smoother if possible so are these things in the realms of an "at home mechanic" or are they a bit more advanced...like "only get your landy specialist to do it" type things?

Do all Discos have really heavy duty clutches on the manual V8's? I test drove a TDi300 and I don't remember the clutch being as heavy as my V8.

Check your gearbox oil is correct, some mechanics put in 80W/90 hypoid diff/gear oil and that is just plain wrong for your box. There are specialist manual gearbox oils from Penrite. Check their website.

Hmm how do I go about checking and changing my gearbox oil? Is it the same kind of thing as changing engine oil or are the bits much harder to get to?
