DIY service advice TD5

HI Guys

Running a 2003 D2 TD5 - have run out of time before easter for a full service (120,000km due).

Everyone tells me this motor will run forever if I look after the filters....

So, being a diesel novice myself, what filters should i change now so i don't have to worry too much about running past my due date for service?

Anything else I can easily do myself? Changing oil, would be the other obvious thing.

just both oil filters and use gen ones,, there not expensive, maby the fuel filter as well, and check all your drive line oils,,, not hard eather, all could be done in a hr,

allso 7.2L exactly, no more no less, and i no you will put 7.2 in and it will read low, thats cos it takes ages for all the oil to get to the sump, and use a good fully synthetic oil, i no its expensive for the oil but you only do it once every 10,000k, and plus all preventative maintenance is good i say, more the better

use the following steps.

1. Purchase Rave CD from incisor on the forum (daves interesting things)
2. Ring MR automotive in redcliffe ask them to send you a service kit for a TD5 disco 2

the rest becomes self explanatory.

I have friday off so if you want to drop round I'll show you the servicing requirements.

Also, the main oil filter can be a bit of a pain to remove, a bit of patience is required. Some techniques here have been mentioned like using some speaker wire wrapped around the filter to remove it. Also the screw driver on the upper rim of the filter also works well.

Don't have to worry about all the gadgets & tips to remove the main oil filter, just buy some Superworks oil filter pliers from Supacheap,approx $17. Red handles& black grips. Makes the job quite easy.

Hi, if I would jump at the invitation from Dave (Blknight). You can pick up so many tips it isn't funny. A little advice can save heaps of time. frustration and $$$.

Doing a service may sound simple enough and normally is - 2 oil filters, air filter and fuel filter, but if you have never done this before and are only a bit mechanically minded, things can go pear shaped.

For example:

Removing the oil filter under the turbo can be a PITA, even more difficult if you have the second battery fitted. Knowing how hard retighten it correctly -smear of oil on the O ring ..

The centrifical filter is simple but don't overtighten the screws in the cover. There are plenty of people on this forum who have stripped these.

Replacing the fuel filter - easy enough but put a smear of diesel on the gaskets, make certain the old ones have been removed. There is also a re-starting procedure after a fuel filter change. I cycle the fuel pump 5 times before re-starting. My original drivers manual says only once, but this has been revised in later manuals.
