Just wait until you have a close to write off accident. This is the insurance that I have and since the hail damage its been a constant battle for me to get any sence out of Budget Direct.

The main problem with Budget Direct is Market Value is about $4000 to $5000 below true market value. They also run on about 50% write off whereas others 60 - 75%.

So, in my case, a low Market Value coupled with a 50% write off makes my hail damaged Disco very close to being written off. They have agreed to repair it, at this stage. I am looking at a very shoddy repair on an immaculate Discovery in my eyes worth about $18,000.

I have been advised that 'Do not be surprised when you drop the car off for the repairs that a day or two later...'Sorry, but we have reassesed your vehicle and we have decided to write it off.'

It will then appear down at the auction house and someone will get a slightly hail damaged Disco cheap. Budget Direct will get their money back easily and it will not cost them a cent, if not make $$$$$.

And then I have to go and spend another $10,000 on top of my payout to get exactly the same car back i.e. Discovery Td5, 180,000k's, etc.

    Go figure

My GIO renewal this year was $590.44 for $20,100 agreed value ... previous year was $503 for $22,500 ... made this years renewal $29.38/$1000.

I did an online quote (with GIO) and got $591.78 for $25,700 agreed value !! WTF !! ($23.03/$1000) ... do not blindly accept your renewal notice !

AAMI was $588 for $25,500. YOUI was $530.25 for $25,500, and as soon as I finished the online quote they rang me!! ... and offered a better $519.63 ... and an extra $23 odd for glass cover with a $50 excess.

Market value, or a low agreed value makes it too easy for the insurance co's to write off your disco (they decide the market value at the time of the claim ... how convenient!) ... they win, you loose ... keep that in mind. Most insurers I checked with state my 2004 D2a is worth somewhere between $20,000 & $34,000, so $25,500 is a fair figure I reckon. I could replace my D2a for roughly that amount.

I took that advice, rang BD and switched to Agreed Value of just over $14k (red book value is less than $11k) good news was it came at no additional cost to premium. Then I thought I'd better close out all loop-holes available to them and got the CDL (re-intsated) and the Coil Conversion noted on the policy along with the 2" lift already noted. Those two mods did add another $55.75 to the premium, reasonable IMHO.

    Thanks for the tip-off.

I got my GIO renewal for $850 as market calue $11000 which I thought was not flash, so I went online to GIO and got an agreed value of $14500 for $580
After seeing that I would never just pay on the bill that comes in the mail every year

Just got my renewal only to find that premiums have doubled from $760 to $1400!
Checked as to reasons and was told "natural disasters" and a change from CGU to Allianz - why, CGU has withdrawn from 4wd insurance and will only be doing road cvehicle in future.

I'm on the hunt for a new insurer.....

    Cheers,

    Franz
