Thread: TD5 Harmonic Balancer Replacement

This tool cost about $5 for the steel, 10x30 flat bar.P1020622.jpg

Holes are diam 12, centres placed at the corners of a triangle 95 each side.
Distance from end of handle to furthest hole 385. At this size it will sit under the left chassis rail (undo) and on top of the rail (tighten).
I used a 15/16 AF airtool socket, 3/4 drive, Im sure there is a metric equivalent.
Bolt is TIGHT, right-hand thread, you will need a long cracker bar and length of pipe as a lever. I borrowed a large torque wrench to retighen bolt (?450Nm).
Radiator was removed but it might be possible with it in place if you are careful.

So the tool braces the crankshaft from turning whilst undoing & tightening the bolt do you need a puller to remove the harmonic balancer. I think i can make something similar.

No puller needed and no Keyway.
Make sure you do it up tight, see the rave for torque,hope you got strong hands

Interesting reading this is,

Mine recently developed a "rattle" on idle, took ages to locate it, fitted new tensioner, new PS pump, new water pump , diff aircon compressor, all in hope it would stop the noise as it only happend when the V blet was on, so had to be something driven by that......all that was left was the alternator till I noticed the little "play" in the balancer when releasing the slack on the V belt

My "assumption" was the rubber had gone weak between the outer and inner parts of the balancer, so un did the 3 bolts and added some washers to space it apart a bit and hey presto!! no more rattle.......I know will still have to fit a new one, but at £400 it was a bit much to swallow at the time!!!........

Thanks for all the information I will attempt to remove the harmonic balancer tomorrow but first I will make up the tool and go from there.

Well I have removed everything Rave told me to and now only have the 24mm bolt in the centre to remove boy is it tight have tried everything at my disposal but still can not loosen it have bathed it in wd40 and will leave it overnight to seep in give it a few hits and then see if I can loosen it. Would like a few suggestions of what else that i can try.

Have a look at how tight it has to be done up
Explains why it's tight

My trick "WITH CARE"
Socket on breaker bar resting on top of the L/Hand chassis.
Have a good look around to make sure all is clear and turn the key.
You could jump the starter relay if you know your electrics.
You only want to crank the motor not start it.
Removing the fuel pump relay will help it to not start.

Lets see what other tricks there are..any one?

Well its off one ring spanner and 5 foot of 1.5 inch pipe and i was able to get it to move now waiting for the parts to arrive and i will get it back on the road.
