I have just bought a Series 2 SE7. Driving last night on our country road I noticed there's no dimmer for the instrument lights. Just great being blinded by the instruments when your on the lookout for kangaroos!
Does anyone know of, or has made their own, dimming circuitry?:(
It's very possible that the plug to be there unused beneath the binnacle, see RAVE- Electrical library- connector views - C0201 , if you find it you'll have to buy a dedicated thumbwheel switch AMR2745 and fit it, if the plug isn't there you'll have to wire the switch yourself to header C0759 between pins 11 and 13 , not a killer
You wont find a connector ready to be used otherwise the lights would not be working at the moment. As stated earlier, some wiring changes are required to remove the direct connection to allow the switch to be spliced in. Find a D2 dimmer switch at a reasonable price first - new switches were way too expensive for me when the vehicles were new.
The wires from the dimmer switch to it's plug are:
pin 1 = red/brown
pin 2 = red/orange
pin 3 = black
you have to route the wires as follows:
version 1:
- red/brown into C0759 -13 (remove/cut the existing red/orange wire which is there !)
- red/orange into C0759 -11 (this might be empty)
version 2:
cut the wire which goes into pin 13 and connect the red/brown wire from the switch to the side which goes into the header and the red/orange to the other
- black to ground
as in the attachments
I hope we can come up with a simple solution for the dash dimmer.
I think the part number for thumbwheel switch is AMR27445?

Thanks for the info. Sounds fairly straightforward. Do you know what the resistance values should be for the dimmer potentiometer? Jaycar has a wide selection.

Its not a potentiometer, its a 12v pwm signal generator that varies the duty cycle.
You can use any rheostat/potentiometer there up to 1KOhm, the original one has 1KOhm according to RAVE... and additional 5 Ohm for bypass, i dont see how a PWM signal would affect that simple electric feed for bulbs circuit though

I dont think its that techincal Graeme, on the schematics it looks like 2 resistors, one for Bright (1.3 ohms), the other for Dull (5ohms).
Same thing could be replicated with a switch and a resistor, (looks like 5 ohms on the schematic).
