    Discovery2 air suspension

Hi. My rear air suspension has deflated and I am out bush NT! I have found blown 30 AMP self levelling fuse blown and replaced with another but blew also.
Vehicle is now riding on bump stops and presume undrivable as workshop manual says not to drive if system depressuried. A short drive was very uncomfortable.
Can anyone out there give me some advice on options? At this stage I am looking at just ordering some springs to replace ir bags and be done with it.

I am remote and can't move vehicle anywhere until suspension is fixed in some way - temporary or permanent. No trailer here to take anywhere either.
    Cheers, Anthony.

There is a guy on D2Au website cant remember his name who makes an emergancy block with air fitttings.
    His details below.
    Contact questions@4x4intelligence.com.au or 0419 378 981

Take the 2 6mm airlines off the compressor and manually pump up the bags.

The airbag man in Queensland would probably have some thing, AIRBAG MAN | Australia's No. 1 & leading Air Suspension :: Airbags :: Air Springs Specialists

Failing that you could adapt something to the 6mm airlines to manually pump up.

    Cheers

Sounds like the failure is the compressor ... blowing fuses ... which may/may not have been caused by leaking airsprings overworking the compressor. You could manually inflate the air springs with the attachments already mentioned ... if they will hold air ... and you're mobile, otherwise it's a compressor & airsprings.

Have you checked the compressor, wiring, etc ... it could be a fault, not a failure.

If you do need to moove the vehicle, try letting your tyre pressures down to 15-20psi and drive slowly ...

    SOME PROGRESS DISCOVERY2 AIR SUSPENSION

Thanks for all your replies. I got the compressor going by pulling main wiring off and strting compressor with a few bits of wire and another battery. Didn't pump up springs though and very noisy. So maybe it is compressor. I don't think there are airbag leaks. There is definitely a problem further up the line electrically and this will obviously need a technician to sort out - I'm not sure about computers in cars.

I will try the manual pumping up bags with separate compressor and see if they will hold. I asume that once I pump these up I will need to hook back up to compressor to stop air leaking out? I have completely removed compressor at this stage. I wonder too if it is a solenoid valves playing up.

Thanks again everyone and keep the suggestions coming.

I am going over to conventional springs after this. Anyone changed springs themselves out there - difficult job?

    Cheers, Anthony.

Converting to coils is pretty easy to do, but the BCU will need to be told that the car no longer has air suspension.

Ring Neil at Sutton Motors in Alice Springs (08 8952 1334) and he will be able to advise you. Tell him Big Jon said to call...

    Anthony,
Replacing the air springs is quite straightforward - even in the bush. I have recently had a similar experience on Fraser Island. If springs have failed, MR Automotive at Redcliffe ((07) 3284 6688) can express post a set to nearest mail point. One tip - when one fails and you continue driving the stress on the remaining spring can cause it to blow soon after (order a pair if you choose this path).
Removing requires a jack, deflated SLS and wheel off. Remove the airline, slide off the two retaining clips on top (don't lose them!). Rotate the base 90 degrees to disengage from the seat on the axle. Reverse procedure to re-install.
If you want to drive with SLS deflated and need clearance, find a discarded mudflap, cut into 2 inch squares and wire a stack of them onto the axle where the bump stop engages. You might get another 2 inches of bumpy lift this way.
Best Wishes and keep the SLS - it's worth it, despite the current misery.

Another fix if the Springs are servicable and the issue is the valves/ compressor.

Jack the vehicle up to the standard height and use chassis stands to allow the suspension to droop to the ground. If it doesn't the valves are sealed shut.
Remove power to the valve blocks/ compressor.
Loosen the air supply lines at the valve end to allow air into the springs.
Seal the ends of the lines with something removeable (like a screw with sikaflex/ silicone on the threads) whilst remaining disconnected from the valve blocks. Secure these ends from hanging down.
If you can't looses the fittings, do it at the spring tops. It's is easier and safer to do it at the valves.
There is a slim possibility that the screw/ plug may be forced out from back pressure if you hit a big bump or long corrugations.
Check regularly & Contain the missile ; )
This will get you going to reach a sparky to trace the elec fault.

    Hope this helps. Dave.

    a pair of side cutters
two schrader valves and a 12 volt compressor is all you need to continue,,,

That compressor is probably over ten years old and full of water.
Dont ruin a great car because of lack of servicing.
