brake light switch

Thanks and trying to download now. So last night I went with the wife to do the tests, hooked the battery back up, brake lights on. Pressed brake, lights on, she said they did not get any brighter. Then unclipped fuse box and went to get torch from garage, came back and the lights had gone off. Had a thought overnight, the trailer brake unit is attached to the fascia panel under the steering wheel by the left hand clip, ie where my left knee is. Could it be something to do with the wiring to the brake unit ? Possibly something I could be knocking to trip ? Please please please......

what's certain is that the brake lights are getting back feed from somewhere... unfortunately i dont understand what you mean by "trailer brake unit" but if jiggling there helps insist on it maybe you find something ... the trailer's live wire in the socket is near the brake lights circuit that's for sure.... i should be there to see with my own eyes and measure things... if no joy get a sh known good fusebox and swap it to rule it out cos it's very suspect.... even if it's not the issue it's important to be ruled out and good to have one within reach all the time.... sorry that i can't be for more help but you have a realy odd issue there

How is the trailer brake unit wired in is it soldered or crimped or does it have those god awful scotch locks. If it is scotch locks I would change it immediately as they can give you all sorts of trouble

i must admit my ignorance in this area again cos it's the first time i hear about "trailer brake unit" but as it sounds it seems very suspect in this particular issue... i have caravan and trailer socket on my car and they both work but no additional ''hardware'' for that in the fusebox area...or at least i didnt know about such thing.:blush:

i'm learning something here every day:)... that's it you live and learn:cool: ... if it's connected on the brake circuit it might be the cause of this issue

Drove to work and still ok, will wait again and then have a play with the brake controller and report back.

Morning all, lights came back on on Saturday, I had a play with the connections on the brake controller, they all seemed ok but gave them a shove in (male and female type connectors), went to back of car and lights were off again. I have driven about 5 journeys since and haven't had problem since, so and crossing fingers it could be as simple as this. I hope I am not tempting fate, but would like to thanks everyone here involved in assisting. My initial thoughts when started happening was very scary, thinking I might be on the way to a big bill, but felt totally re-assured having the help I was getting here, and felt like it would be a matter of 'when' rather than 'if' we would find the problem.
