Once a diesel gets access to an oil supply (from the sump/turbo or elsewhere) it will burn the oil as fuel until the oil supply is exhausted, or the engine disintegrates, siezes or both.
was always a problem with the old series diesels and oil bath air cleaners, if there was a roll over or even just one going to sleep you had to be careful that the air induction system was completely free of oil before starting the engine up again.
oil in the diesel isnt exactly uncommon but its also not a daily occurrence. there will be a few cop outs that LR can use to get out of having to replace your engine for you once the TD5 has had a decent run on its usually time for a new engine. Guessing you couldnt stall it out?
prity much only way to stop a diesel running on is to block the air going in to the engine,( with something very hard, do NOT use your hand as it WILL be sucked into the engine) or if its a manual, but them it has a chance of slipping the clutch, herd of it before but never seen one in the flesh;)
Lady I work with will never have another landrover after this happened with her Disco tdi. LR were just as useless those years ago as they are now when a car is out of warranty. Another friend had a cracked head on a TD5 Defender with fuel in the oil and only 2 months out of warranty and again LR more or less said suck it up. They had it fixed at their expense and took it from the LR agent straight around to Nissan as a trade in. Pity LR market themselves as a premium product but do not follow up with after sales service in so many examples. Not to say other manufacturers are any better but the LR premium brand marketing is just hype.
I'm thinking of installing a cable operated air shut off valve in my 300Tdi for when the inevitable runaway occurs:D
