Once a diesel gets access to an oil supply (from the sump/turbo or elsewhere) it will burn the oil as fuel until the oil supply is exhausted, or the engine disintegrates, siezes or both.
was always a problem with the old series diesels and oil bath air cleaners, if there was a roll over or even just one going to sleep you had to be careful that the air induction system was completely free of oil before starting the engine up again.
