just for the record, i dont know if the people before me waited untill the heat light went out before starting, but i always do...
i am used to it from my parents pootrol...
i think its worth it no matter what climate :)
or maybe its just habit :P
Mine makes the noise too - have never thought twice about it.
I'm another one who also waits for the glow plug light to extinguish before starting, at least when the engine is cold. Habit I suppose.
My last diesel was a Ford F100 with a 6.5 Chev V8 diesel - it had a button that you manually held in and counted to 6 for the glow plug operation, and it would NOT start when cold if you didn't use the glow plugs, even here in Kalgoorlie. The downside with that set-up was that if you held in the button for too long (as my son did once when he started it while I was away), you destroyed a set of plugs. Fortunately, replacement was an easy and relatively inexpensive exercise on the Chev, and no other damage done.
