I am currently also running BFG AT 255/70 R16 on the V8 and have not noticed any power drop. Nice size tyre. Happy so far.:)

$302 for each tyre (245/75R16's with fitting extra elsewhere as I could not wait at the only place that had them for them to be fitted) in Darwin when I replaced the Cooper S/T 255/70 that delaminated on the drive across.
They are made in the USA version tho.
I went 255/70/16 Pirelli Scorpion AT (passenger rated) and they were good but going to 235/75/16 Maxxis Bravo AT light trucks are better again. On sand and in the sticks and for that matter on the road - they dont tram track like the wider ones too.
Cheers
there are more costs than this to larger rubber:
. less responsive performance
. greater fuel consumption (particularly if an aggressive tread pattern)
. greater unsprung weight, possibly bump feedback - probably an idea to fit a Billie steering damper
. steering/braking implications
. higher gearing which can be an issue of the mark for TDs and for low range work
So really depends how much you need more clearance under the diffs and grip...
