help! td5 transmition stuck in 3rd gear auto

i have got a td5 2002 discovery with an auto trans and it seems to be stuck in 3rd gear. when i excelerate the engine has full power but reves up to 2.5-3k and slugishly excelarates, i can tell the engine has full power because of all the smoke and the body twisting as it trys to take off, both green lights are flashing indacating a fault (s and m ) and on the highway it is reving out at 3200 at 90 kmh when it is usaly at 2000 i think it may be boned. what do you think ? any help aprecated.

iv kinda got my axx hanging out on this one, im going to have to take it into the dealer soon. im thinking of dumping the whole auto thing and going for a full conversion to manual. if its going to have to be pulled out im 95% sure ill put in a 5 speed box. i dont like how it shifts down when i have a big hill to climb. there is no power at 4000 its better to hold it in 4th at 3000 where the pwer is. so i guess secritly i rill did want it to blow up....... ? thoughts ?

    cheers. jeff.

1, Don't keep drving it like that, 2, it is more than likely the 'XYZ' switch on the side of the trans, easy fix. Do it soon before damaging the gearbox.
Don't try and convert it to manual, just buy a manual Disco2. The engine ECU, BCU and other bits and pieces will have to be changed/ reconfigured etc at great expense. An auto Td5 D2, chipped, set up right and in good running order is much nicer to drive than a manual one IMHO.

"limp mode" can also be caused by a weak vehicle battery, ensure the charging system is good and the battery is healthy.

If the Gearbox ECU gets a crappy voltage at start up, it will throw the dynamic duo (M&S) lights up.
It is also worth moving the gearlever back and forth through all the gears, sometimes even a dirty "track" inside the xyz switch can be sorted that way and the fault go away.

The "route" of the problem is in the design of the vehicle, the left hand side aircon drain drips drirectly onto the XYZ switch on the side of the box, so over time water ingress (depending on aircon usage) simply corrodes the switch parts inside.

One last issue is the gearbox wiring loom can also chaffe through where it goes over the top of the box, you then get a short to earth and the lights will also appear.

Correct, I have cured a couple with new battery etc, especially at the start of winter. The XYZ switch is difficult to get at in a 2002 because the CAT is in the way, just remove the engine pipe and it is a cinch. VERY important to scribe a mark across one edge of the switch and the trans case as a reference point, and transfer the mark to the new switch before refitting, as it is adjustable and requires a special tool to set it otherwise.
A new switch RRP is around $600, but can be found cheaper if you hunt around.
    Good luck Jeff

i actualy did have an old battery, it was only floating at 12v after the drive back from syd (300k) so i swapped it for an optimum yellow top and after i started it the running voltage is up to 14.7v but still no joy lights back up and tranny stuck. so im going to have to take it in to get scanned on monday.

i got it scanned but the mechanic dident have the right scanner after working on it for an hour charged me any way!! could not beleave it. any how after throwing away my last doller at a trany i dident want, i decided to ship the whole car donwn to adalade to "trimph rover spairs" where they are going to pull out the auto and put in a 5 speed, with a brand new clutch and fly wheel. i told them to put the old one in the boot so i could burn it when it came back, however it was included in the traid for part of the work.

thanks for your help evrey one, and coments, ill wrap this up and open a new discoution on transmition coversions, as there seems to be little listed on that.

    cheers, jeff.

Bit late noticing this, but may not necessarily be a gearbox fault. Sometimes an engine electrics prob will cause the gearbox to go into "limp" mode for protection reasons. I had the same prob, and when scanned there were a couple of engine fault codes registering. cleared these and no probs since.

Now it looks like the XYZ switch, get this before spending big bucks on the tranny.
