Here's a pic of a second battery install behind the RH quarter panel:
It is of a 2004 D2, currently for sale on the net.
I know nothing about it and I don't even have a D2, but thought the pic might be interesting.![]()
Hi all,
I've read all the dual battery threads looking at places to install a second battery - some very good solutions.
QUESTION: Has anyone fabricated a suitable battery tray or hanging mount to install a second battery under the car at the RH rear corner behind the quarter panel (ie opposite side to the exhaust) ?
The mount would need to hang the battery under the vehicle and also protect it from rocks and possible bottoming out.
BACKGROUND / RATIONALE:
I'm planning to install my second battery (primarily to power a fridge). I have reached the conclusion that I should install a 120AH AGM battery mounted lying on it's side in this location. A Fullriver DC 120AH should just fit. My main criteria is that I would like to have a 100+ AH deep cycle battery and loose no load or luggage space. As the battery needs to be on it's side it cant be a flooded wet cell battery.
The alternative would be to use one of the rear storage bins (and hence loose some storage space but have the advantage of being able to use a cheaper traditional wet cell battery)
I have heard of an Optima being mounted in the location Im planning but havn't seen any pics - thoughts / comments welcome !
Cheers

Thanks Nice1
Looks a bit vulnerable from that camera angle!
But with some decent protection it might be OK. Perhaps using this box: Aussie RV Products
But protected with added checkerplate like this one:

Too vulnerable and adding 20+ kg behind the rear axle of an already butt heavy vehicle will make it a pig handling wise.
A good knock under there, guarded or not, will have potentially bad results!!!
I know you have SLS, but have you considered making another tray to mount on the chassis behind the compressor unit? Mainly to keep weight forward of that back axle.
Nice tidy install, but that would cop an absolute hammering off road. It's a shame you have SLS, as I have mine in that cradle, not as vulnerable and its a good spot for it I think...better than the hot engine bay.

I hadn't considered getting the weight forward of the rear axle - good point.
I went out this evening for a look near the compressor - not quite enough space for a 100AH+ battery as there's a canister thingy in the way.
As Hendrik suggested, the SLS compressor spot would be ideal. Also, on the opposite side of the car to the compressor would be a good spot but this is taken up by the ACE? or brake line? block.
I havn't been offroad yet, but I tend to agree with your comments below - the rear quater panel position is quite vulnerable to damage.
Oh well - might have go back to the battery in a rear bin option.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

I was looking at investigating further on a 2nd battery in the engine bay just forward of the firewall on the passenger side. I have not looked hard at the location and assume there is exhaust over that side somewhere, but considering mounting a tray in the area.
Requires more research but if anyone else has successfully mounted a battery there it would be handy to see some pictures.
I'm not sure a big fan of the alternative of installing 2 smaller batteries in the standard location. Although there are good points for it, i'm just not sold on it.
