    thanks all ... I'll start ringing around to see what deal I can get on your recs ....can't understand why Michelin would stop this line ...businesses make money in spite of themselves!!!

    Probably has something to do with the fact that the XPC's NEVER wear out. Mine are over 10 years old!

    Great in Sand - BF Goodrich AT T/A

    Went with the BF Goodrich AT T/A - 40K later and no wear identified ... no much hard off road except for sand frollicking in Byfield National Park .... handled the 5 Rocks access with no problems (run them at 25psi) been impressed to date

    Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I have them on my d2 and after some initial concerns after a trip to the northern flinders range in late 2011 they have been great. I have the 235/70R16's in passenger construction fitted, which replaced the 235/70R16 Latitude HP's that were on the D2 when I got it.

    The only issue I've had was a sharp rock pierced the centre of the tread while driving on a access track which runs between the Arkaroola Rd. and Nudlamutna Hut. I had no issues with punctures for the remainder of the trip which covered the bottom part of the Strzelecki Track, the Southern Flinders Ranges, and a trip home via Yunta, Dangalli NP and Murray Sunset NP.

    They obviously aren't a mud tyre but have been ok on the bits of muddy stuff I've driven. In the dry on sand and bush tracks I haven't had any issues with them at all, and have never felt they are a limiting factor.

    On the highway they are very quiet - when I first switched from the Latitude HP's I found the Cross's were noticeably quieter. On road grip is very good, I've never felt like they'll let go even in the wet.

    I've seen comments elsewhere that they are a bit soft and tend to wear fairly quickly. I've done about 24K km on mine over the last 15 months and they seem to be holding up pretty well so far.

    For their intended purpose - a 65:35 onroad/offroad all terrain - they are a good tyre.

    Add: If you can be bothered dealing with google translate, a french 4x4 site did a long term test on the tyres. It's a bit hard to decipher the translation but interesting none-the-less.

    Thumbs up Another to consider..

    I'm getting a good run out of Continental CrossContact LX in 245.70.16. 27000 km so far.

    Quite impressive performance, especially around town and in the wet.

    I have Silverstone AT's. Look exactly the same as BFG AT's & @ $950 for 5 fitted & balanced could not be happier. Have done about 5000km & no real sign of wear as yet.

    Fitted up Pirelli ATR's just b4 Christmas, Done 3000 Kms so far' gravel and blacktop and they seem great! smooth, quiet ish, grips the dirt roads well from what I can glean you have 3 choices, Pirelli atr , BFG's or Silent Armour. No1 around here will touch Coopers . The other thing is making sure the tyre matches the placard recommendations as close as possible to avoid potential Insurer gremlins in the advent of an accident. Which is 1 reason I went atrs.
    And do not listen to anything a tyre dealer tells you, they are nearly as bad as real estate salesmen!!
