Chip -V-ECU
Hi again,
A good mate bought a DP chip recently and the improved engine results in his auto TD5 are impressive. So much so that I thought it would be a good investment as well for my manual TD5 - However, just as I was about to part with a fair chunk of the hard-earned....I read of a company in SA who will 're-flash' a standard ECU for peformance gains not to dissimliar to the 'chip' with the benefit of around half the price of the 'chip'!
I searched throughout the many posts on this site and couldn't see any real comparisons between the 2.
There is a lot of words regarding performance chips and re-mapped ECUs but, not much on the actual performance gains on each system - particularly the ECUs.
Has anyone tried a re-mapped (Flashed) ECU or had some experience with 1 or the other? BTW - you don't have to sell me on the performance chips....I've had them fitted in past petrol and diesel engines with great effect but the remapped ECU has me very interested. Another benefit is that I could pick up a 2nd hand standard ECU and have it remapped and keep my original standard.
Any assistance appreciated

Hello,
I hate to be the stick in the mud but DTUK power chips are out of the same factory as the DP powerchip. I believe they are about Aus$600 + postage(I don't know how this compares to your ECU remap quote). I've had one in for a while now. The only issue that I did have was fixed when I found sensor unplugged near the air filter box. All good after that(teach me to check things properly after a service).
These things are plug and play, easy to adjust and work very well
. I know of another person with a Defender TD5 that has done in excess of 100,000Km with a chip and had no issues.
It depends on how much you want to spend, the plug in chip is cheaper than an ECU modification with similar results. That was my main consideration in the search for cheap extra power.
Cheers,
Jason

The DTUK and DP style chips only intercept the timing pulses and add or subtract fuel... They cannot modify timing of pulses etc...
A proper re-mapping can alter fuelling and timing and improve the vehicle.
Some re-maps cost the earth, others are excellent value (the time taken to develop the maps and the software cost is ridiculous)...
There are Landy Enthusiasts
who look after other enthusiasts at a very competitive rate

Something to consider when deciding between a 'powerchip' or ECU is whether you have to purchase another ECU. I have the ECU which I was told at the time was not reprogramable.
This meant having to purchase another ECU and leaving it at someones workshop for an entire day to be fitted and recoded, or, having a rechipped ECU posted to me(the purchase price is based upon you swapping your old ECU for theirs and still having to leave it with someone with the appropriate electronic gear to code it to your vehicle (meaning I would be charged for fitting on top of the original purchase). You cannot fit an ECU yourself without purchasing Hawkeye or Nanocom or similar to get your car going, unless you know someone who you can borrow one off.
If the 'Powerchips' are soooo bad and have suuuuch bad power delivery, or caused short or long term engine damage, then reputation alone would send the manufacturers of these things broke in a day.
The only people that I have heard have anything negative to say about powerchips are people trying to sell/fit/reprogram ECU's.
The 'powerchips' work.
Time, cost, ease of installation and power/torque increase makes them a very good option.
Oh......and I don't sell Powerchips
Cheers,
Jason

Jason i dont think anybody here is saying powerchips are bad ,what alot of people are saying are that you have a option of getting either a powerchip or a ecu installed chip or nanocom download, the laters been the more preferred option as it is more like reprogramming all your settings unlike powerchips just adjusting certain settings ,yes there are things that can go wrong in both setups just like anything if its not installed or programed properly.
Supose its like buying a can of coke or a can of homebrand cola
i know which one i will be choosing
(tombie)
you would want to go with somebody /supplier which you know has soley spent there research on Landrovers /rangies as we all know how finiky and different our pommie mates made our rigs as alot of these powerchips have a broad spectrum of makes and models in there supply which could be lacking a few finer tuning points
my 20cents
cheers Kelvin

Let's clarify...
Powerchip = Brand = hard chip into Ecu
Dp etc = Intercepter type box.
Remap = replacing factory fuel and ignition tables with a different version.
Exchange ECUs are easily done. And remaps etc are untraceable to examination.
Intercept boxes, unless declared and approved can void insurance..
Remaps can too, but are undetectable.
If I was comfortable with the performance of the intercept boxes I would sell them to non-flash ecu owners. But they aren't as refined so I don't!
If you're happy, power to you.
