    Dashboard broken + height

    Hi all,

I think this is my first post, so, hi!

Down to business, I purchased a D2 in Dec 2009 and promptly found a bunch of problems with it which have since been fixed. Having said that, it got us from Brisbane to Adelaide in one piece and with zero hassles so even with oil leaks, a fuel leak and a broken RMS it ran fine.

Since then I've had a few minor issues like the horn buttons popping out and the dashboard breaking off - and it's the last issue I'd like some advice on.

The dashboard (dials and whatnot) has broken off at the two screws that hold it down. For now I'm using cable ties to hold it together (and to be honest they're doing a great job) but I'm sure I could screw it back together using larger gauge screws. Has anyone come across this before?

Second question is the height. I've always felt it was slightly higher than stock models but I don't have one to directly compare it to. From pics on the internet I'm sure mine has been raised a bit, but again, not sure. The pic below is the only decent profile pic I can find.

    Thanks!

    Hi and welcome !

To check whether your Disco is standard height or not, see the standard Hub To Guard measurements here !:

Its hard to tell the height just from the picture.

For the dash, I haven't had to remove or repair mine so can't offer specific advice. If the screw holes have broken you may be able to try a local motor trimmer to get some metal trim clips which take different sized screws.
    Cheers

    dashboard broken

O.K.! I guess you mean the 2 screws in the instrument binnacle just behind the steering wheel.

The originals are very short and are recessed down inside the plastic.

they come up against a very weak shoulder that after a few ins and outs tend to fail.
this means the screws do up fine but have broken through the shoulder,so,won`t hold the binnacle in place.

It`s a fairly simple fix....get some countersunk screws,no shorter than 22mm,no longer than 25mm thread length of approx. the same gauge.
Carefully countersink the screw entry holes on the binnacle and screw up.
the originals are hidden, but any replacements are probably silver in colour.
Simply paint them black, and all looks great,no wobbly dash.

and to fix the horn buttons, cut a piece of rubber thong to fit inside the spring just long enough to clear the contacts, silicone both ends and replace. horn button stays put, rubber does not stay compressed when you press the horn, all good. (and a cheap fix)

Thanks! I`ll remember that trick when the time,as it surely will, comes.

Excellent suggestions, the two screws on the binnacle are exactly what I meant, only I didn't know it was called a binnacle. I'll go grab the screws and give it a try on the weekend. The damn things broke when I was on some moderate corrugation at Deep Creek, I was even following a responsible speed limit!

The horn button has been dicky since I purchased the car. At the moment I have a spacer between the contact points so the horn won't sound and I've wedged something in there to hold the button tight. Looks fine and won't break, but doesn't work. The amount of times I had to push it in while driving, honking wildly all the while, was enough to push me into that little kludge. I'll see how I go fixing that this weekend too.

    Cheers!

    broken dash

Hi Gavor! you should be fine if you follow my suggestions for replacing the screws,be aware that the front of the binnacle near the windscreen is held in place by 2 spring steel prongs that need to engage in slots in the front of the binnacle, they just lever off to release.
The only time you should have to remove this part again is to replace instrument lights in the back of the instrument cluster.

I have just done the binnacle screw repair. I used Zenith chipboard screws from Bunnings, size 8gx25mm. They fitted perfectly and needed no countersinking (2003 D2a). The steering column shroud needs to be removed to access the screws. When replacing mine with the two halves clipped together, I had trouble locating the three screws that mount the bottom shroud into their threaded holes. I found it very easy to work around this by mounting the bottom shroud first and then clipping the top one onto it later. A whiz kid could probably remove the top shroud by unclipping it off the bottom shroud without removing the screws at all.

looking at your pic your disco looks taller than mine,

mine is a 2004 d2a with 170k on it, yours looks about 2" lift, but it is hard to tell from pics
