Problems with my TD5 II Disco

Hi guys,

Thanks heaps (I think ;)) - you all seem to speaking from the same page, but its not the page I wanted to hear :(:p.

It is with the normal mechanic today and for the moment I just have to leave it to them (sort of). I did mention Justin to them this morning (don't think that one went down too well - hehehehe) - I noticed him on some other posts and we have been to him many many moons ago for a V8 Disco we owned - yes hubby was impressed with his knowledge, but we couldn't remember his name, or exactly where he was :wheelchair:. I think I'll just have to see what the normal mechanic comes up with and if the opportunity arises get the car back and I'll take it to Justin. The normal mechanic has been fantastic, but yes I think it could be out of their league - unfortuantely.:(

A couple of questions though:

Redback - the injector harness is that the same as the injector loom - was replaced in Feb. Why would oil still be getting on it, if it was replaced? (not being nasty - seriously curious).

Hendrik - we were quoted $900 for the oil cooler from a tassie dealer, $650 from a Qld dealer and paid $500 with a 4 day delivery from BritishParts in the UK - was pretty impressed with that one :D. It was really cool tracking exactly where the part was and if it wasn't for a weekend in between, delivery would have only been 3 days. :BigThumb:(I'm impressed) Once they replaced the oil cooler - I can no longer hear the sloshing in the consol (its actually not in the dash, but in the consol - sounds like a water bed). So would it still be a head when the sound is gone, or could that be because excess water has been drained??

How much should I expect if it is a head???

Oh if anyone is interested, get the BMW back today, 2nd new 2nd hand motor in as many weeks - overheating issues with both of those motors :mad:. Give me horse and cart anyday [bigsmile]

Hi Robyn, there could be left over residue on the plug OR they only cleaned it and told you it was replaced, or the miss may be related to the head gasket.

My oil cooler went about 4 months back, it too emptied nearly all the engine oil into the cooling system, it was $1700 (900 in parts) all up inc a minor service with the LR repairer doing 6 flushes to get the oil out of the cooling system.

The oil cooler is underneath the turbo and the bad part about it you have to buy the new cover for it as well as they wouldnt sell the cooler on its own.

The sloshing noise you had was posibly an air lock in the heater.
Given that you had been toping up the water/coolant reguarly.
There has been posts in the past of this noise appearing after a coolant change where re-bleading the system was needed.

Even if the injector harness has been changed the oil in the main loom can still drain to the ECU(computer).
Usually needs 2-3 cleans to get it all.

Thanks guys again. Still no closer - had a good long chat with the mechanics today and they are still looking into it - but things are still looking as if its a head. Not happy about that one Jan - the motor has only done 130,000klms :(

All that we have spoken with have said that it is a rare thing for the head/head gasket to go - is that correct? (Hence why they are looking for other problems first). From what I've read on here it seems to be common, but that could be just because people come on here and talk about :cool:

Dazza - $1,700 :eek: - I guess I shouldn't complain - although I still haven't got the mechanics labour bill, but prior to this last incident I was speaking with him about servicing the gear box that was of course it my bill was exorbitant - he indicated it wasn't as bad as I had thought, so I'm guessing the total bill for the oil cooler will end up heaps less than $1,700.

Aliend2 - is the injector harness hard to clean??? Not that I am a mechanic in way, shape or form - but my brother is a Grade A Diesel Mechanic - hence as a kid I was often subjected to hours of helping my Dad and Bro with their cars :twisted: If it is an easy job - then maybe it is something I should learn.:angel:

Again thanks heaps - this is a good forum, glad I found it and maybe one day (once we get the beep beep car going properly), I might just let hubby have a play with it - trade in the horse float for some mud :twisted: Will keep you all posted on how we go.

The water sloshing sound usually occurs as you press the accelerator from stop to go. Reminiscent of head gasket. Release any pressure from the expansion tank, replace cap, start motor and rev it a little at standstill. See if the coolant in the expansion tank shows signs of bubbling. Another sign of compression in cooling system. There are any number of signs, but in the end you have to pull the head off to see wether its a gasket or cracked head.

Hi Robyn, what colour was the coolant when you first got the Disco ? and what colour is it now. Red or Green ?
Also, good reading can be found in the Technical section, called "Good Oil " this has Posts that should help you understand some of your problems. Read sections, "Oil in the harness". and "OAT coolant".

I see the harness has been changed so the clean is only the remainder of the oil in the main loom.
The thing to check is if there is still oil present at the red plug to the ECU.
It's been refered to but here's what to look for...
ECU is mounted to the battery box so cover of and take the jack out,
One philips screw holds it in place so remove it,
Lift the ECU out(you may have to move the earth lead from the battery,I don't),
Undo both plugs and look for oil.
If oil is present remove the white protecter from the red plug,
Spray the red plug and ECU with "Contact Spray" this is available from most auto shops,
Allow to dry and refitt.
This may have to be done 2-3 times.
If oil is still present after this somewhere on here is a tread on flushing the loom but try the clean first.

Thanks AlienD2 - will definitely have a look at that when I get the car back. Where abouts does the injector harness sit itselfs?? I've been told it sits under the rocker cover and that's why it consistently gets oil on it?? Is that correct?

yea, the process is called wicking,,
the oil literally gets sucked along the copper wires underneath the cable insulation,,
lots of posts,(every Td5 ever made will probably suffer from this at some stage)lots of fixes, some are permanent some arent,
A search here and in The Good Oil forum will be time well spent.:D
