5K for good TD5 is about right. 5k for remove and refit is a joke.
If it were me, I would go the replacement rather than rebuild, but everyones circumstances are different.
cheers
Hello All,
I have the pleasure of owning a 2003 TD5 Auto which I have had for four years. I have driven it to Melbourne and back from Perth.Recently took it out to the Canning Stock Route. Regrettably though, the air filter has come loose and I have "dusted" the engine.
I have been told rebuilding the TD5 is not cost effective. I suspect the head, valves, pistons, rings, bores and injectors are cactus (hard to start lots of blow past etc. however still runs well when warm and returning 9kpl). The turbo is visibly damaged so no argument there!!
Has any one rebuilt a TD5 and if so can this be done less expensively than a replacement? Current estimate is around $10K (engine $5k remove and replace $5k).
Thanks for reading.
Michael.

Same happened to a fellow up here( Cairns) the mechanic found that the inner plastic guard under the air pickup had" torn" loose so therefor accident damage resulting in dusting of engine---INSURANCE ---covered the damage and wrote the car off. Check with Cairns boy on this website. Just a thought?![]()
that is less than a quote to fix up my injectors and pump! glad i have it at a second shop for another quote
I own the same vehicle and my motor got badly dusted. In the end I replaced it with a second hand engine for $6500. I was told by a couple of places it was around 9-10k for a rebuild. Mine was like a steam train when you lifted the oil cap. I beieve they said it was blowback. The engine still performed ok but burnt a lot of oil and my intercooler had quite a bit of oil in it.
I havnt looked into this in detail (and if you do, please keep ME and the forum posted), but it appears you can buy a "short engine", completely remanufactured, for $2600 in the UK. Of course, there is freight, possibility of needing an exchange, and some work moving components from your old engine to new one etc, but it seems that it would be worth investigating.
Turner Engineering - Replacement and Remanufacturer of Land Rover Engines including 300TDI, 200TDI, TD5, V8, turbo diesel & petrol etc, available from stock
Hmmm - As a freight indication, I shipped an old BSA single in a crate from the UK via sea freight late last year. Took 12 weeks door to door and cost just over $1,400. Air freight was triple!!![]()
Let's assume approximately $1000 for a box containing a block, crank, 5 pistons and rods.......(The bike was stripped and packed down into a relatively small crate!)
1,495GBP = $2600AUD at current exchange rate (1.00UK=$1.73AUD)
At $3,600, it's a lot of money just for a block, crank, 5 pistons and rodsand a long wait with a disabled car sitting in your backyard!
That is of course, if Patrol32 was going to strip the engine himself in his backyard and send the block to the UK for exchange (More freight costs)
Patrol32 didn't indicate how many K's were on his engine but at 7 years old, a safe guess would be around 150,000K?.
150K may mean recon or exchange injectors, valve guides and a surface grind of the head.....May as well while it is apart rather than 20K down the track!
Add on top will be an exchange turbo, complete gasket set, miscellanous bits, labour, oil etc and my calcs are now up around $8,500+.....Whew!
Long point made short......Spend the extra money for a quality job and have another 7 years of pleasurable trouble free motoring - OR - spend less money and buy an engine complete out of a wreck...with the risk of not knowing its history and subsequent possibility of big $$ repair bills!
My sympathy with your dilemna - I don't think I'd like to be in your boots at present mate![]()
Good afternoon Herr UPanzer,
Yes, in simple terms the two pad foam air filter was dislodged allowing dirty air directly into the air intake!
Have since been advised by several trusted sources that the foam filters supply more air than the engine can use so may revert to the disposable paper filters.
Cheers,
Michael.

Thanks every one for your replies, advice and sympathy!!
I have investigated a local rebuild at A$8,300, however I am concerned that sand will have damaged the injectors and bottom end which will not be included. I costed parts from LR Direct at GBP 1,990 or A$3,500, and a replacement short engine. When you include freight from UK I don't think this is cost effective.
I will replace the engine, using a trusted source, and have Rover -Tech do the work.
While I am at it I am going to ceramic coat the exhaust manifold, turbo (turbine housing) and exhaust pipe to reduce under bonnet heat.
Lastly I will fit a snorkel and dust shaker to reduce the chance of this recurring.
I have been advised that the two pad foam filters which I have fitted provide more air than the engine can use, so I may revert to the original paper filters.
Thanks again for all your help.
Michael
